Amish Paper Bag Chicken

Amish Paper Bag Chicken

This chicken brought me back to childhood! It reminds me of the kinds of dinners my mom used to make. This is a fun to make recipe. Shaking the chicken in the flour mixture is so satisfying. Baking the chicken in the butter makes the skin turn out golden and crispy…sort of like fried chicken but much easier and not so unhealthy. The drumsticks come out juicy and tender and, according to Skyler, they are a great source of protein. (Recipe adapted from Amish Paper Bag Chicken on Amish 365).

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • All purpose flour
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Black pepper
  • Dry mustard
  • Salt
  • Chicken drumsticks
  • Butter

Steps

Add the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, dry mustard and salt to a large paper bag or container with a lid. Shake to mix. Add in the chicken and shake well to coat the chicken. Let chicken sit for 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350° F. Add the melted butter to a large rimmed pan (I used a jelly roll pan). Place the chicken pieces on the pan, do not crowd them.

Bake for 30 minutes. Flip chicken over and bake for 30 more minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • This chicken pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, corn on the cob, a fresh green salad, or even some classic mac and cheese.
  • Can I use other cuts of chicken? Yes. Thighs or bone-in breasts work well, but you may need to adjust the baking time. Cook until chicken reaches internal temperature of 165° F. I used this thermometer*.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. A good way to reheat is in the air fryer!
  • Other recipes you can make with dry mustard are Instant Pot Garlic Lime Chicken and Instant Pot Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches.
