Instant Pot Sloppy Dorothy Sandwiches
This recipe is a twist on the normal sloppy joe! You use Dorothy Lynch salad dressing to flavor the meat. Dorothy Lynch is a tomato based, spicy and sweet dressing. It’s perfect for sloppy joes. The pickles and cheese bring the sloppy dorothy sandwiches to a whole new level. I am a huge fan and was sad when the pot was licked clean…no leftovers for me.
Try making these sandwiches for family dinner or for serving at a church potluck. You can easily double or triple the recipe to serve a crowd. You can make with a combination of ground turkey and ground beef, if you’d like. Just make sure to use a lean meat since it goes in raw and you probably don’t want a ton of grease floating on top.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon Beef Base
- Worcestershire sauce
- Lean ground beef–I used 85/15. You can also use ground turkey.
- Garlic cloves–fresh (I use a garlic press*) or jarred, minced garlic
- Minced dry onion–I buy the big bottle from Costco. You can also use 1 tsp of onion powder.
- Kosher salt
- Garlic powder
- Dry mustard
- Tomato paste–I like freezing the leftovers in one tablespoon increments.
- Dorothy Lynch salad dressing–you can also try using Catalina, French or Thousand Island salad dressing.
- Buns, dill pickles and slices of cheddar or American cheese–for serving. We also like serving potato chips on our sandwiches.
Steps
- Dump ingredients into Instant Pot: Add beef broth and Worcestershire into Instant Pot. Add raw ground beef into Instant Pot and break it up* (yes raw). Dump in the garlic, onion, salt, garlic powder, dry mustard, tomato paste and salad dressing. Don’t stir.
- Pressure cook: Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 5 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5-10 minutes and then move valve to venting (you can let the pot sit for several hours on the keep warm setting). Remove the lid. Use a spoon to break up meat and to stir well.
- Serve: Salt and pepper to taste. Toast buns. Serve a scoop of meat on top of each bun with a slice of cheese and pickles.
Notes/Tips
- This is an easy recipe to double or triple to feed a crowd. Adjust ingredients accordingly (except broth…keep broth at ¾ cup) and keep the same cooking time.
- You can keep this meat on the keep warm setting for a long time if you’re feeding in shifts. You can make this ahead of time on a busy day.
- Serve with fresh fruit (like grapes and strawberries), potato chips and veggies and dip.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in the 3 or 8 quart pot with no changes.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- This recipe can be gluten-free. Use a gluten-free broth and Worcestershire sauce. Serve on gluten-free bread or buns.
- Other recipes you can make with Dorothy Lynch salad dressing are Thai Pasta Salad and Game Day Chicken Chili.

I have to ask where you are from. Most people don’t know about Dorothy Lynch unless you are from the Midwest. It is my favorite dressing!
I live in Utah! But I think the dressing originated in Nebraska 🙂
You mention freezing tomato paste. How do you do that? Do you just put a Tbsp in a snack bag or some other type of container?
Probably ice cube tray would work well after frozen than remove from ice tray and put in baggies.
I get a little pan out, line it with some parchment or waxed paper, drop tablespoon fulls of tomato paste, freeze, pop them off and put them in a ziploc bag and freeze. Easy!
Dorothy Lynch salad dressing is not available in my area and I am unfamiliar with it. What would be a good substitute? Thank you!
french or catlina
I live in Alberta Canada and as far as I know, we don’t have Dorothy Lynch salad dressing. Can anyone please tell me what it’s comparable to (Ranch, Catalina, Italian, etc.)? Thanks I’m advance!!
