Instant Pot Stick of Butter Rice
Stick of butter rice…yes you read that right. Just by the name you know it’s going to be good! It’s rice, a stick of butter, water and a package of onion soup mix. You throw everything into your Instant Pot and come back in a few minutes to perfectly cooked and flavored rice.
- You can use brown or white rice for this recipe. Brown rice takes 22 minutes in the pressure cooker and white rice only takes 3 minutes. Both use a 10 minute natural pressure release.
- We served this rice with apple juice chicken. It also tastes great with grilled pork chops or steaks.
- If you want the rice more seasoned, as for a stand alone meal, use beef broth instead of water.
- Try stirring in rotisserie chicken and steamed veggies after the pressure cooking time is up for a full meal!
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot Duo 60 7 in 1*. You can make this rice in a 3 or 8 quart pot with no changes.
- If you don’t want to use packaged onion soup mix you can make your own.

This makes for a great fried rice. I leave the rice in the pot when the time is up and stir every 15 minutes until the consistency I want. I do leave out the broth so it won’t be too salty when adding soy sauce.

Great idea…love this!
I made this the other day and with only three of us eating, there was plenty. The next day I took about half of it and added salsa when I reheated it; a nice Spanish-type rice emerged. I have to confess that the next day I used the rice and added three fried eggs (that broke) and fed it to my four dogs. They loved it!!!!
I’ll be making it again, for sure!

The dogs are eating good at your house!!! haha!! Thanks for the 5 stars.
Yeah, my dogs are a wee bit spoiled.
I also want to say that your site is my go to for IP recipes. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much Connie!!
Would this be high pressure on a pressure cooker that isn’t an instant:?
Yes it would
This was delicious! My husband asked me when I was going to make it again 🙂
I added steamed broccoli/cauliflower and rotisserie chicken. We ate off of it for a couple of days. Do you think it would affect the cooking if I cut the butter in half? It seems a little over indulgent with all the buttery goodness flavor 😉
★★★★★
You could cut it in half for sure! Will still be awesome!
Can you use plant-based “butter”? I have family that do not eat any dairy but love riice.
I love your recipes. I use my pressure cooker a lot, and my best friend uses her crock pot. We can both enjoy the recipes!
Yes, You definitely could use plant based butter for this recipe.
Out of curiosity; how long will it take for cooking instant rice?
I haven’t tried instant rice in the IP. My guess is that it will only take 1 minute with a 5 minute natural pressure release.
Can I use white rice?
Yes, Instant Pot recipe states: Set the manual/pressure cook button to 22 minutes for brown rice or 3 minutes for white rice.
Crock Pot Recipe states: Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours (white rice will cook quicker than brown rice).
Yes, you can. Read #2 in the Instant Pot instructions in the recipe, or up in her notes. You won’t cook it nearly as long as you do the brown rice.
