Instant Pot Sloppy Dudes–ground turkey with salsa verde on top of a toasted bun and topped with smashed avocado and tomato. An excellent loose meat sandwich that can be made in the Instant Pot or Crockpot.
This recipe can be made in the Instant Pot or slow cooker. Both instructions are listed in the recipe card below.

Instant Pot Sloppy Dudes
This recipe is adapted from a Rachael Ray recipe. Sloppy dudes are a southwest version of sloppy joes. These loose meat sandwiches use ground turkey but you can also use ground beef if you’d like. With salsa verde flavoring the meat and smashed avocado on top of the sandwich these joes have tons of flavor and are quite addicting. You may want to double this recipe! The meat stays good in the fridge or freezer for another meal on a different day.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Olive oil–or avocado oil or canola oil
- Ground turkey–or lean ground beef
- Onion–or 2 Tbsp dehydrated minced onions
- Garlic cloves–or 1 tsp garlic powder
- Jalapeno
- Cumin
- Salt and pepper
- Chicken broth–or water and Better than Bouillon Chicken Base
- Salsa verde–or green taco sauce
- Lime
- Avocados
- Hamburger buns–or kaiser rolls
- Roma tomato
Steps
Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the oil and the turkey. Break up the turkey. Add in the onion. Brown for about 5 minutes. Add in the garlic and jalapeno and saute for 30 seconds. Stir in the cumin and a pinch of salt and pepper.
Add in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking.
Dump the salsa verde on top.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 5 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid. Stir in zest from the lime.

Scoop the flesh of the avocado into a bowl and use a fork to smash. Add in the juice from the lime. Add a big pinch of kosher salt.

Toast the buns.
Assemble the sloppy dudes: bun on the bottom, sloppy turkey mixture, avocado, slice of tomato and the top of the bun. Eat and enjoy!

Notes/Tips
- Ideas of what to serve with sloppy dudes: corn on the cob, fresh fruit, potato chips or tortilla chips, black bean salad, green salad
- I used my 3 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 6 quart pot.
- To make this gluten-free serve on a gluten free bun or over rice instead.
- This recipe is dairy free.
- Store any of the ground turkey leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. The avocado mixture is best the day of because it tends to get brown the longer it sits.

Thanks for the 5 stars!
Ultra Mini Instant Pot? Is it as adorable as it sounds?
yes it’s quite cute!
Might need one of those! Never too early to start my Christmas list.
This recipe is amazing! I doubled it -used 1# beef and 1# venison. I will try using less broth next time as it was a little juicy even after simmering for a bit. Otherwise followed recipe. Great new combination of foods, flavor, and use of burger. Whole family loved it!
So glad to hear it Andie! Thanks for the review!
Looks delicious! So you don’t drain the fat after cooking the meat?
Usually ground turkey is pretty lean so I didn’t. However you certainly could!
