French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes–an easy 30-minute ground beef dinner made with French onion soup, Worcestershire sauce, and melted provolone cheese for a fun, savory twist on sloppy joes.

Cabin Meal Series
We’re spending the Fourth of July at our cabin with Reagan, Skyler, and a group of their friends, and this year I decided I didn’t want to spend the whole trip in the kitchen. I’m keeping the menu full of crowd-pleasing meals that are easy to transport, made with simple ingredients, and don’t leave me with a sink full of dishes. They’re all teen-approved and perfect for feeding a hungry group without a lot of stress. Over the next week, I’ll be sharing each of the recipes we made, and I hope they help make your next family vacation, reunion, or summer gathering a little easier too!

French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes (Cabin Meal)
If you’re feeding teenagers or hungry adults, this recipe is always a hit, and you can easily double the meat mixture for a crowd. Serve with chips, tater tots, watermelon or raw veggies and dip for a complete meal. We served this for dinner but it could also make a great lunch. The leftovers are even better the next day and the meat mixture freezes nicely.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Lean ground beef–or ground turkey
- Garlic powder–or fresh minced garlic (about 3 cloves)
- Kosher salt
- Black pepper
- Onion powder–or 2 Tbsp dried minced onion
- Ground thyme–or Italian seasoning
- Flour
- Campbell’s French onion soup
- Ketchup
- Worcestershire sauce
- Water
- Hamburger buns–or brioche buns
- Provolone cheese slices–or mozzarella, Swiss, Monterey Jack or white cheddar
Steps

Heat a large pan over medium high heat. Add in the beef and break it up. Brown it for about 5 minutes and drain off the excess grease. Stir in the garlic powder, salt, pepper, onion powder and thyme.

Sprinkle the flour over the top of the meat and stir in. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Stir in the French onion soup, ketchup, Worcestershire, and water. Stir and simmer until mixture becomes glossy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 8 minutes).

Use a slotted spoon to serve the sloppy joe mixture on toasted buns with a slice of provolone cheese on top.

Notes/Tips
- Serve with raw veggies and dip and potato chips or potato salad. Watermelon would go along with this nicely as well. A perfect summer meal!
- For extra French onion flavor, sauté a sliced onion with the beef before adding the seasonings.
- Toast the buns before assembling so they don’t become soggy. Place the buns cut-side up on a baking sheet and broil for 1–2 minutes until lightly toasted. Top each bottom bun with a slice of provolone and broil for another 30–60 seconds, just until the cheese is melted.
- Add sliced mushrooms to make the filling stretch farther.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Freeze the meat mixture for up to 3 months.
