Slow Cooker Round Steak and Gravy

Oh my goodness! This was the EASIEST recipe and my family went crazy over it. I didn’t tell them that it literally took 5 minutes of prep and the slow cooker did all the work. Haha! I just made the meat in the crockpot and then made some buttermilk mashed potatoes in the Instant Pot and it was a hearty, comforting dinner. The meat was crazy shreddable as you can see from the pictures. I was happy it worked so well especially since the round steak was quite affordable. I’ll be making this again. This would be super easy to double if you’re serving a crowd.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Beef top round steak–I used thin-cut steaks, but regular top round steak will work too; you may need a little extra cooking time if it is especially thick.
  • Onion–Yellow or white onion works well, or use shallots.
  • Garlic–Fresh minced garlic or jarred
  • Au jus mix–You can use a packet of brown gravy mix instead.
  • Water–the au jus mix already contains plenty of salt so I went with water instead of a broth.

Steps

Place half of the sliced onions and half of the minced garlic into the bottom of slow cooker.

Top the onions with the round steak.

Place the remaining onions and garlic on top. Sprinkle the au jus dry mix on top and then pour in the water.

Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours.

Shred meat with a fork right inside the slow cooker. Stir meat mixture over the top of mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Notes/Tips

  • Serve over buttermilk mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower or hot cooked egg noodles. Add green beans, peas, carrots or broccoli on the side.
  • Thin-cut steaks are a great choice for this recipe because the long cooking time gets them nice and tender. If your steaks are thicker, make sure they are fork-tender before shredding. You should be able to shred the beef easily with two forks when it is done. If it is still tough, it likely needs more time rather than less. Cover it back up and continue cooking until tender.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in an 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for 4 days. Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
