Instant Pot Hamburger Hotdish

Instant Pot Hamburger Hotdish

If you have a pound of ground beef (or ground turkey) and a few other pantry ingredients you can make this classic hotdish recipe. The original recipe is baked in the oven but of course my version is made quickly in one pot…the Instant Pot. It reminded me a bit of my mom’s goulash recipe and was a homerun as we were all very hungry and tired from a day of driving. There are several ways to mix and match this recipe so get creative and enjoy!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Ground beef–or ground turkey
  • Diced onion–or 2 Tbsp minced dry onion
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon Beef Base
  • Egg noodles–or elbow macaroni or penne (increase pressure cook time to 4 minutes)
  • Canned corn–or fresh or frozen corn. You can also use a can of creamed corn.
  • Jar of marinara sauce–or spaghetti sauce. I used Bertolli Marinara Sauce.
  • Green bell pepper–or another color of bell pepper
  • Shredded cheddar cheese–you can also use another type of cheese like colby jack

Steps

  1. Brown the beef: Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the beef and break it up. Add in the diced onions. Brown the beef for about 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder and Italian seasoning.
  2. Deglaze: Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking.
  3. Layer in ingredients: Dump in the noodles evenly. Dump the corn, marinara sauce and green pepper on top. Don’t stir. This helps prevent the burn error message.
  4. Pressure cook: Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 2 minutes. When time is up move valve to venting and remove the lid.
  5. Serve: Stir well. Stir in the cheese and let melt. Scoop onto plates and serve.

Notes/Tips

  • I like to use this hamburger chopper tool* to break up ground meats and this saute paddle* to scrape the bottom of the pot.
  • I like shredding my cheese off the block for better meltability.
  • Try serving it with garlic bread and a side salad.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in an 8 quart pot. Cut the recipe in half for the 3 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
