In-N-Out Animal Style Cheeseburger Casserole–an easy Instant Pot dinner with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, melted cheddar cheese, pickles, tomatoes and a creamy homemade burger sauce.

In-N-Out Animal Style Cheeseburger Casserole
This messy bowl may not look fancy, but it is pure deliciousness! It has all the burger vibes, and that burger sauce drizzled over the top really deserves the chef’s kiss. I halved the recipe since it was just Greg and me for dinner, but now I’m wishing I had made the full batch so we’d have leftovers for tomorrow. Don’t skip the dill pickles on top…they add the perfect tangy crunch to finish it all off!
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Ground beef–or ground turkey
- Onion
- Kosher salt
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Mustard powder
- Paprika
- Black pepper
- Beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
- Russet potatoes–Yukon Gold potatoes are another good option and don’t necessarily need to be peeled
- Cheddar cheese–try American cheese for even more of an In-N-Out-style cheeseburger flavor
- Dill pickles
- Tomatoes
- Mayonnaise
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Dill pickle juice
Steps
Turn Instant Pot to the sauté setting. When display says HOT add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onion. Brown for 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, paprika and pepper.

Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.

Add in the potatoes. Add a pinch of kosher salt over the potatoes.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set manual/pressure cook button to 2 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 2 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid.

Make the burger sauce by whisking all ingredients in a small bowl.

Stir gently. Scoop mixture into four bowls. Top each bowl with cheese, pickles and tomatoes. Drizzle with a little burger sauce. Eat and enjoy!

Notes/Tips
- Serve with shredded lettuce for more of a burger feel.
- Cheddar is delicious, but if you’re really going for that In-N-Out-inspired flavor, American cheese would be a fun option.
- If you’re a sauce person, you may want to double it! Extra sauce can also be used for dipping fries or spreading on sandwiches.
