French Onion Slow Cooker Dump Chicken

This easy dump and go crockpot recipe is such a win! There is no chopping or sauteing steps so getting the recipe going literally takes 5 minutes. The results were flavorful, tender chicken with a cheesy French onion sauce. Buttery bread is the perfect dipping tool for the sauce so make sure to grab some garlic bread or a baguette at the store. Enjoy!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Boneless skinless chicken thighs–or boneless skinless chicken breasts (just watch the cooking time so they don’t dry out)
  • Campbell’s French onion soup
  • Cornstarch–optional
  • Gruyère cheese–or Swiss cheese or mozzarella
  • Parmesan cheese–or Pecorino Romano
  • Garlic toast–or crusty French bread, Texas toast or sourdough

Steps

Add chicken thighs (whole or you can cut into pieces) into slow cooker. Pour in the french onion soup over the top.

Cover and cook on low for 2 hours (for pieces) or 4 hours for whole thighs.

In a small bowl stir together cornstarch with equal parts cold water until smooth. Stir the mixture into the slow cooker. Cook on high until sauce thickens.

Stir in the cheeses.

Serve chicken and sauce with garlic toast.

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with garlic toast or buttered, toasted baguette to soak up every bit of the cheesy onion sauce.
  • This is also delicious spooned over mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles or white rice.
  • If using chicken breasts, check for doneness a little earlier since they cook faster than thighs.
  • Want even more French onion flavor? Stir in a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce before thickening the sauce.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms during the last 30 minutes of cooking for another layer of flavor.
  • I used my 6 quart Ninja slow cooker. You can also make this is a 3, 4 or 8 quart slow cooker.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for 4 days. Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with gruyere are Instant Pot Classic Dauphinoise Potatoes and Instant Pot Country Club Chicken.
