Easy Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken
I love how simple this one is to throw together. Just a quick whisk of the sauce, nestle in the chicken, and let the slow cooker do its thing. The smell alone while it cooks is amazing! The sauce turns into this perfectly balanced combo of salty, sweet, and garlicky with a little kick from the fresh ginger. When you shred the chicken at the end, it soaks up all that flavor and gets super tender. This is one of those recipes that feels like takeout but is way easier (and cheaper!) to make at home. For the best experience, serve it over hot rice to soak up every bit of that sauce.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Water
- Low sodium soy sauce–or coconut aminos, Tamari
- Brown sugar

Add water, soy sauce, brown sugar, onions, garlic and ginger to slow cooker and whisk.

Nestle the chicken into the sauce.

Break chicken apart and serve chicken and sauce over hot cooked rice.

Notes/Tips
- Serve with hot cooked rice or cauliflower rice, steamed broccoli or snap peas.
- This recipe can be gluten free if you use gluten free soy sauce or tamari.
- This recipe is dairy free.
- Want a little heat? Add red pepper flakes or a drizzle of sriracha
- I used my 6 quart slow cooker but this can be made in a smaller slow cooker too. Each slow cooker cooks differently so chicken might take shorter or longer than recipe states.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
