“Don’t Knock it Till You Try It” Chicken

You know those recipes that sound weird when you see the list of ingredients but actually taste good? This is one of those. This is made with chicken, apricot preserves, onion soup mix and more. Surprisingly you can’t even tell that there are apricot preserves in the dish. But there is that bit of sweetness that adds so much. If you enjoy sweet-and-savory flavor profiles (similar to sweet-and-sour chicken or BBQ-glazed meats), this dish will likely be a hit at your house!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Apricot preserves–or apricot jam
  • Onion soup mix–I used Lipton’s
  • Mayonnaise
  • Heinz chili sauce–find it in the ketchup aisle
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Smoked paprika
  • Dry mustard
  • Black pepper
  • Chicken tenderloins–frozen or fresh. You can also use boneless skinless chicken thighs or breasts. I prefer the smaller cut of chicken so that the sauce to chicken ratio is higher. If you do use thighs or breasts then you’ll need to increase cooking time to 2-3 hours on high or 4 hours on low.

Steps

Add apricot preserves, onion soup mix, mayo, chili sauce, worcestershire, paprika, mustard and pepper into slow cooker.

Stir until well combined. Add in the chicken and stir to cover in the sauce.

Cover and cook on high for 1 to 2 hours or on low for 2-3 hours.

Serve with sauce spooned over the top and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with rice and a side of steamed broccoli
  • I used my 6 quart Ninja Slow Cooker. You can also make this in a 3 quart slow cooker.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with chili sauce are Slow Cooker 3-Ingredient Party Meatballs and Slow Cooker Creamy Sloppy Joes.
  • What is chili sauce? Chili sauce is a condiment made from tomatoes, chili peppers, vinegar, sugar, and various spices. It has a tangy, sweet, and mildly spicy flavor, making it versatile for a variety of dishes. It’s often thicker and more seasoned than ketchup but less spicy than hot sauce.
  • Each slow cooker cooks differently. My chicken was cooked through in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Other slow cookers might take longer. The cooking times provided in the recipe are shorter than many slow-cooker recipes because chicken tenderloins cook quickly. Check for an internal temperature of 165°F and avoid cooking longer than necessary to achieve tender and moist chicken.

I’m glad it tried it! I really didn’t have a lot of faith given the ingredients but I was pleasantly surprised. I was out of smoaked paprika so had to use Hungarian paprika & was still delicious. Will try with meatballs next. Thanks for the recipe.

I tried this recipe a week ago and it didn’t turn out that great. I cooked it longer than the 2-3 hours in the crockpot. There wasn’t enough sauce and of course, it definitely didn’t have any after 5 hours in the crockpot. That’s why I have hesitated to comment.

I am trying it again today. I’m going to be home today so I can check on it. My sauce definitely doesn’t look the the sauce in the recipe. It is a thicker. I’ve followed the recipe exactly. Not sure why I’m not getting the same results.

I just put this in my crockpot again. Fingers crossed that it was a fluke, but I still don’t think it will turn out since the sauce is thick, but we shall see.

Can this be converted to an IP recipe?

I bet it could but it would have to be watered down with extra broth to bring the pot to pressure…or it could be made pot in pot. That’s why I didn’t use the IP I just felt that the taste would be compromised.
