Billionaire Casserole

Billionaire Casserole

You may have heard of millionaire casserole which is a layered spaghetti dish but I decided to upgrade the millionaire casserole and make it into billionaire casserole. The results were spectacular. Yum! This was a tasty supper! I used old fashioned wide eggs noodles instead of spaghetti for better texture plus stirred in a bit of garlic salt and butter. I used chive and onion cream cheese instead of plain cream cheese… mmmmm. And finally I used a high quality sauce that I love. I think you’ll really love this one! Enjoy!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Old fashioned wide egg noodles–I used Mrs. Miller’s brand
  • Butter
  • Garlic salt
  • Black pepper
  • Lean ground beef–I used 93/7
  • Dry dehydrated onion–I buy the big container at Sam’s or Costco
  • Lawry’s seasoned salt–or other seasoned salt
  • Mezzetta roasted garlic sauce–or Rao’s brand
  • Sour cream
  • Cottage cheese–or ricotta
  • Tillamook chive and onion cream cheese–or just plain cream cheese (not as good!)
  • Whole milk mozzarella cheese
  • Parmesan cheese

Steps

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Boil noodles according to package directions. (I used my Instant Pot to boil them by adding in 2 ¼ cups of broth and the 8 ounces of noodles, then I pressure cooked for 4 minutes).

Drain noodles and stir in the butter, garlic salt and pepper.

While noodles are cooking heat a pan over medium high heat and add in the ground beef. Break up the beef. Stir in the onions. Brown for 5 minutes, or until no pink remains. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the seasoned salt. Turn off the heat.

Stir in the roasted garlic sauce.

In a small bowl whisk together the sour cream, cottage cheese and cream cheese until smooth and creamy.

In a 9×13 inch baking dish layer the noodles, then the creamy mixture and finally the meat sauce.

Bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle the cheeses on top and bake for 5 more minutes.

Let sit for 5 minutes and then serve. Top with some fresh basil.

Billionaire Casserole

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with a green salad and Italian dressing. We love the Olive Garden brand Italian dressing.
  • I used a 9×13 inch ceramic baking dish*.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. I frozen my leftovers in individual servings so it’s easy to warm up for a single serving lunch.
  • Other recipes you can make with cottage cheese are slow cooker taco lasagna and instant pot starbucks egg bites.

Can you make this ahead of time?

Yes, this recipe can definitely be made ahead of time! Here’s how to do it, with some tips to keep it tasting fresh:

      Make-Ahead Instructions
      1. Assemble the Entire Dish (Unbaked)
Prepare the noodles, beef sauce, and creamy layer as directed.

Layer everything in the 9×13-inch dish (noodles → creamy layer → meat sauce), but don’t add the mozzarella and parmesan cheese on top yet.

Cover tightly with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

      2. When Ready to Bake
Let the dish sit at room temperature for about 20–30 minutes while the oven preheats to 350°F.

Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes, then uncover, sprinkle on the mozzarella and parmesan, and bake an additional 5–10 minutes, until bubbly and melty.

      Freezing Option
You can also freeze it before baking:

Wrap the assembled (but unbaked and without the cheese topping) dish tightly with plastic wrap and then foil.

Freeze for up to 3 months.

      To cook from frozen:

Thaw overnight in the fridge, then bake as directed (add the cheese near the end).

Or bake from frozen (covered) at 350°F for 60–75 minutes, adding cheese in the last 10 minutes.

      Pro Tip
If you’re making this ahead and worried about noodles getting too soft:

Cook them slightly under al dente since they’ll continue softening during baking and storage.

Let me know if you want a smaller version or tips for making it in individual portions!

You can get them at your local grocery store. They will be in the isle with macaroni and spaghetti noodles. Also if you want to give your casserole a little extra flavor, add a chicken or vegetable bullion cube to your pasta water while you’re cooking the pasta. It gives the pasta a little flavor.

This was fantastic! May be one of the best recipes I’ve made from here, and that’s sayin’ something. For sure it’s the first recipe I’ve made from here without using the Instant Pot. I made it exactly as written and the results were delicious. Huge win with the family, too..
A couple of tips—let the cream cheese come up to room temperature before mixing it with the other ingredients, and if the mixture is still a bit stiff, pop it in the microwave for 15 sec. or so until it becomes easily spreadable across the noodles. You’ve made me look good in the kitchen once again, Karen. Thank you.

I definitely want to try this recipe but I’m not the biggest fan of cottage cheese so I was wondering if I could substitute Ricotta cheese for cottage cheese? I always use Ricotta instead of cottage when making my slow cooker lasagna or any lasagna for that matter. I also put a chicken or vegetable bullion cube in my pasta water when cooking my pasta. It gives the pasta some flavor.
