Slow Cooked Steak Diane Casserole

This is one of those good old-fashioned meat and potatoes dinners that really hits the spot! The Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce and mushrooms give the gravy a classic Steak Diane flavor. Greg and I both loved this dish! You can easily double this recipe if you’re serving a crowd. A perfect meal for a chilly fall evening. Enjoy!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Beef stew meat–or a chuck roast cut into bite-sized cubes
  • Flour
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Mushrooms–white button or baby bella
  • Beef broth–or beef bouillon mixed with water
  • Dijon mustard–or spicy brown mustard
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Tomato paste
  • Red potatoes–or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • Heavy cream–or half-and-half for a lighter sauce
  • Frozen peas–or frozen mixed vegetables

Steps

Add beef, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder into slow cooker and stir to coat the meat in the flour and spices.

Stir in the mushrooms, broth, Dijon, Worcestershire, tomato paste and potatoes.

Cover slow cooker and cook on high for 3-4 hours, or on low for 5-6 hours, or until meat is tender.

Stir in the heavy cream and peas, if using.

Salt and pepper to taste. Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with a slice of crusty bread.
  • Add in more veggies. Try stirring in frozen peas or frozen mixed veggies.
  • If you like lots of gravy, increase the beef broth by ½ cup. Keep in mind that this will also thin the sauce slightly.
  • This can be gluten free if you use gluten free Worcestershire sauce and a gluten free flour blend.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for 4 days. Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with tomato paste are Catenzaro’s Casserole and Instant Pot Mexican Pulled Pork.
  • Tools:
    • I used a 6 quart slow cooker. You can also make this in an 8 quart slow cooker.
    • Knife*
    • Cutting board*
    • Magnetic measuring spoons*
    • Glass measuring cup*
