Bacon cheeseburger tater tot casserole

Who can resist the combination of savory beef, crispy bacon, melted cheese, and golden tater tots? You should make this casserole because it’s the perfect mix of easy, delicious, and fun. With simple ingredients and minimal prep, you can have this meal on the table without much effort. It’s like a cheeseburger in casserole form, which makes it especially kid-friendly—and there are no buns required! Greg, Skyler and I all loved this dinner.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Bacon–or turkey bacon
  • Lean ground beef–or ground turkey
  • Onion–yellow, white
  • Kosher salt–or ¾ tsp seasoned salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Ketchup–or Heinz chili sauce, barbecue sauce
  • Mustard–I used yellow mustard. You can also use dijon, spicy brown, etc.
  • Dill pickles
  • Tater tots–or crispy crowns for a shorter baking time
  • Cheddar cheese–or a few slices of american cheese

Steps

Fry the bacon and cook until crispy (I do this step in the air fryer). Place on paper towel lined plate and set aside.

Preheat oven to 400° F.

Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add in the ground beef and break it up. Add in the onion. Brown for about 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease.

Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, ketchup, mustard and pickles.

Transfer to a 9×9 inch baking dish. Top with the tater tots. Bake for 35 minutes, or until tots are golden brown.

Crumble the bacon and sprinkle on top. Add the cheese on top and let it melt for 3 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with shredded lettuce and tomatoes.
  • This recipe is gluten free as long as your tots are gluten-free.
  • I used a 10.5 inch frying pan*, a 8×8 inch glass baking dish* and my Instant air fryer*.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. This is best the first day because the tots are crispy.
  • Other recipes you can make with ketchup are Instant Pot Boarding House Meatloaf Bites and Instant Pot Huli Huli Chicken.
  • Recipe adapted from Sinful Cheeseburger Casserole recipe.

My kids love all your cheeseburger recipes so when I saw this one, I knew it would be a hit! I have a 9 & 12 year old boy and both of them ate this up. I mean, how can you go wrong with tater tots too?!? Thanks for a great meal.
