No Politics Casserole–a perfect Sunday supper made in the Instant Pot. With Italian sausage, red potatoes, cabbage and carrots it’s a meal all in one pot!

No Politics Casserole
I love Sunday dinners. It’s a time to be with family and enjoy each other’s company and not talk politics lol! Nobody will be talking when they eat this dinner because they will be too busy scarfing it down. The Italian sausage flavors everything nicely and it’s great because it’s a one pot meal…which means easier cleanup!
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Italian sausage–I used ground Italian sausage (mild). You can also use sliced links.
- Onion–yellow or white
- Mushrooms
- Chicken or beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
- Cabbage
- Red potatoes–or peeled russets
- Carrots–or baby carrots
- Olive oil
- Dried basil
- Dried oregano
- Fennel seeds
- Kosher salt
- Black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Balsamic vinegar–or red wine vinegar
Steps
Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the sausage and break it up. Add in the onions and mushrooms. Brown for about 5 minutes.

Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.
Evenly add in the cabbage on top.

Layer in the potatoes and carrots. Drizzle with olive oil and then sprinkle the basil, oregano, fennel, salt, pepper and garlic powder on top. Drizzle the balsamic on top.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 4 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5-10 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid.

Gently stir. Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips
- Serve with spinach salad and a dinner roll.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in an 8 quart pot. Halve the recipe in a 3 quart pot.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- You can also use Russet potatoes that have been peeled.
- You can also use smoked sausage instead of ground Italian sausage.
- I like to measure out ingredients with a digital scale*.
- I really like this vegetable peeler* to peel the carrots!
- Other recipes you can make with balsamic vinegar are chicken margherita pasta and flank steak.

Hello! I just found your site yesterday. You have so many recipes that sound good. On this recipe, would it work I’d I used Grands biscuits? I javelin a big bag of them in the freezer. What about puff pastry? Do you have any recipes that use either of those? I. have an air fryer also. I’m fairly new to using both of them. My air fryer is a multi cooker. Let me know about the Grands biscuits. There is just the 2 of us.Thank You!

Hi Christi,
I’m glad you found the site!
I’m confused about the biscuits for this particular recipe. How would you use them?
I do have some recipes that use refrigerated biscuits. If you type that in to the search bar it should bring up some ideas!
Great receipe Karen! Made this tonight and happened to have all ingredients except the Italian sausage, so I used Aidelles Chicken Apple Sausage from Costco and sliced it. Turned out great, so many good flavors with the seasonings. Thanks so much for such good, healthy and easy recipes!!
That sausage sounds great! I’ll have to pick some up next time I’m at Costco 🙂
Will any sausage do? I have noticed that apart from Cheese hardly any food is described as American. i.e. Iris Butter, Canadian Bacon, Danish Pastry, these are the ones which spring to mind but in the UK there is little to choose between the various sausages we have. They pretend to be different but they all contain the same basic ingredients and as far as I have been able to ascertain an Italian Sausage has more fennel than Britsh Sausages which tend to have more sage in them. Is there anything special about Italiab Sausages that warrent me making some because I can only find Italian Style Sausage which tastes the same as British, more or less and I have a recipe for Italian Bulk Sausage which I could get to work on.
In her notes she says you can use other sausages like smoked sausage if you want. I take that to mean you can use any sausage you want. Hope this helps.
Yep like Janis said you can go ahead and use whatever you find there in the UK!
