6 Ingredient Slow Cooker September Farmhouse Potatoes–easy creamy Crockpot potatoes that are a perfect side dish made with tender russet potatoes, onion, broth and sour cream.

6 Ingredient Slow Cooker September Farmhouse Potatoes
YAY September is here. I love the “-ber” months. September, October, November and December! They are all my favorite. These potatoes feel like that first little shift from summer food into fall comfort food. I love that there’s no boiling, draining or mashing involved making these potatoes. I just added the ingredients into the slow cooker and turned it on. They come out not quite mashed potatoes and they’re not roasted potatoes either. They are soft, creamy, pillowy bites in a savory sauce. I kept sneaking more and more bites because they totally hit the spot. You can easily dress them up with cheddar, bacon, green onions, chives, parsley or even a little ranch seasoning. Enjoy!
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Chicken broth–or water and Better than Bouillon chicken base*
- Russet potatoes–or Yukon or red potatoes
- Yellow onion–or white onion, shallot
- Cream of chicken & mushroom soup–cream of chicken, cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup can be used instead. If you’re looking to make this gluten free I have see that Campbell’s now makes a gluten free version of the condensed soups.
- Garlic powder
- Sour cream
- Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper–add these to taste at the end. I just needed a pinch of each.
Steps
Add broth, potatoes, onion, cream soup and garlic powder into slow cooker. Stir.

Cover and cook on high for 2 ½ hours or on low for 4 hours (or until potatoes are fork tender).
Gently stir in the sour cream and add salt and pepper to taste (I used a pinch of each).
Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips
- Cooking time can vary: Slow cookers cook at different temperatures, so use the cooking time as a guideline. The potatoes are done when a fork slides easily into the center.
- Don’t over-stir: Once the potatoes are tender, stir them gently. Russet potatoes get very soft when cooked and can start turning into mashed potatoes if you stir them too aggressively.
- You can make them cheesy: Stir in some shredded cheddar cheese with the sour cream or sprinkle cheese over the top before serving.
- Add a topping: Chopped green onions, chives, parsley, bacon crumbles or extra cracked black pepper would all be great on top.
- What to serve with them: These would be so good with barbecue chicken, meatloaf, grilled pork chops or steak, or ham. Serve with a side of green beans or asparagus.
- Storing leftovers: Store leftover potatoes in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for about 3–4 days. You can freeze these potatoes, but I don’t think this is the best recipe for freezing. Potatoes can become grainy or watery after thawing, and sour cream sauces sometimes separate. They’ll be best freshly made or reheated from the refrigerator.
- Tools:
- Ninja 6 quart slow cooker. They no longer make the model that I have. But it’s similar to this one*.
- Paring Knife* for cutting the potatoes
- Cutting board*
- Little spatula* for scraping out the soup and sour cream
- Magnetic measuring spoons*
