Teenager Delight Casserole

Teens will love this saucy, meaty potato dish. My 15-year-old said it was “bussin”. The author on the original site that posted an oven version of this recipe said, “Teenager’s Delight is my ultimate favorite childhood dish.  I would request this all the time for my mom to make for dinner, and would love when there was leftovers left to eat the next day.”

I changed up the original recipe to make it in the Instant Pot. Plus I used potatoes instead of tater tots and I added in some green beans (optional). I really enjoyed this comforting hot dish. I think you will too!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Lean ground beef–I used 93/7
  • Onion–yellow or white
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Beef or chicken broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
  • Russet potatoes–or red potatoes
  • Cream of chicken soup–I use Campbell’s brand. You can also use cream of mushroom soup.
  • Green beans–canned, frozen or fresh
  • Cheddar cheese–I used sharp
  • French-fried onions

Steps

Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onions. Brown for about 5 minutes. Stir in the crushed red pepper, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Stir in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.

Add in the potatoes. Scoop the soup on top of the potatoes and then dump in the green beans. (Don’t stir).

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 4 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid.

Stir well. Salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with cheese and french fried onions. If you have an air fryer lid place it on top and air fry for 3 minutes at 400 degrees.

Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with a side of corn on the cob, fresh fruit or roasted vegetables.
  • Try subbing the green beans with corn (1 can of corn or 1 ½ cups of frozen corn).
  • If you don’t like cream soups you can use 4 ounces of cream cheese instead of the soup. You will need to add in some extra seasonings and a bit of milk (after pressure cooking) to loosen it up as well.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 3 or 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with your extra french-fried onions are French Onion Beef Casserole and Brunch Casserole.

Right now I’m giving 5 stars just on how great this SOUNDS. can’t wait to make and taste this one. I think my son and his basketball teammates are gonna love this. I did see somewhere that the original recipe used tater tots. You have done so well at adjusting the recipe for all manners of. oooking…so I would like to request the recipe with instructions for the oven bake and using tater tots instead of diced.. I would love to have the tots be a bit crispy here as well.

Great flavor and very easy. I didn’t know what to make, chose this recipe and viola, dinner was on the table in no time! Ours was thinner like a cream based soup but no matter, it was great!

My husband called this dish “ bussin”. Didn’t even realize he knew that word. LOL. And he didn’t even know that’s what your 15 year old called it too. Hilarious. Either way this absolutely delicious! And also very easy. Definitely a new favorite. Thanks!

I haven’t tried this recipe in the oven but if I did this is how I would make it:

      1. Boil some water. Add in cubed potatoes and boil until fork tender. Drain.
2 . Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onions. Brown for about 5 minutes. Stir in the crushed red pepper, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Stir in the potatoes, soup and green beans. (no broth needed)
      3. Pour into a 9×13 inch pan. Sprinkle with cheese and french fried onions. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

What the previous comments said, crockpot or oven instructions please. Sounds like it was maybe an oven recipe that you adapted to Instant Pot. Sounds good as so many of the recipes do, but my pressure pot isn’t as handy as the oven or crockpot, in my case. Thanks
