SOS Casserole

SOS Casserole

Today’s recipe is a casserole version of SOS adapted from South Your Mouth. But instead of using traditional chipped beef we are using ground beef. It’s basically just an easy hamburger gravy served over toast but instead of the toast on the bottom the toast is on the top. Surprisingly good and comfort food to the max. It reminds me of a twist on biscuits and gravy. Feel free to season up your ground beef however you like best…I just used salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. But if you like a bit of heat add in some cayenne or smoked paprika. You can even use steak seasoning.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • 85/15 ground beef–you can also use 90/10 beef. Another option is to use ground sausage. You won’t need the seasonings if you use sausage (maybe a little salt and pepper at the end to taste).
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Butter
  • All purpose flour
  • Milk–I used 1%
  • White bread–or wheat bread

Steps

Heat oven to 375° F. Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add in the ground beef and break it up. Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. Brown the beef for about 5 minutes.

Stir in 2 Tbsp of butter until melted. Then slowly whisk in the flour. Whisk for one minute.

Slowly whisk in the milk for about 2 minutes until the mixture thickens like gravy. Remove from the heat.

Scrape the gravy into a square baking dish (8×8 or 9×9). Evenly add the bread cubes on top and then drizzle the bread with the melted butter.

Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve immediately.

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with some roasted vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and carrots.
  • Try adding some peas in with your gravy.
  • This dish is best served and eaten immediately. If stored as leftovers the bread gets soggy. The gravy does stay good though.
  • Other recipes you can make with white bread are Instant Pot Roast Beef Commercial and French Toast Casserole.

Ditto Bob and Ella. I’ve been eating this for most of my 68 life as a Air Force daughter and wife. I and everyone I have ever served this too loved it.

As Navy vet, I take exception to using ground beef. Real SOS is made with dried beef. Your version is the Armybone, and most likely one most people have a negative opinion of. The Navy edition has more depth of flavor than the Army one and that’s why it’s a better iteration.

What a stupid reason to downvote a recipe.
