Instant Pot Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy—seasoned hamburger patties served over egg noodles and then drizzled with white country gravy.

Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy
This recipe has 3 separate parts: making and browning hamburger patties, pressure cooking the noodles and finally making the gravy. All steps are completed in your Instant Pot! The patties are well seasoned, the noodles are perfectly cooked and the gravy…well it’s just gravy on top!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- 85/15 ground beef—or for lots of flavor use half ground beef and half ground sausage
- Panko bread crumbs–or regular bread crumbs
- Egg
- Worcestershire sauce
- Black pepper–or white pepper
- Kosher salt
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Ground cayenne pepper
- Vegetable oil–or canola oil
- Egg noodles–or rotini
- Water–or chicken or beef broth
- Butter
- Flour–all purpose works great
- Milk–skim, 1%, 2% or whole
Steps
- Make hamburger steak patties: In a mixing bowl add the ground beef, panko bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, kosher salt, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix with clean hands until combined. Form into 4 patties. I like to use kitchen gloves* for this step.
- Brown the patties: Turn Instant Pot to sauté (more) setting. When display says HOT add in the vegetable oil and swirl around. Add in the patties and brown for about 4 minutes on each side. Carefully move patties to a pot-in-pot dish. Set aside.
- Deglaze pot: Add 3 cups water or broth into Instant Pot and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Add in the egg noodles. Place a tall trivet into Instant Pot and place pot-in-pot dish with hamburger steaks on top of the trivet.
- Pressure cook noodles: Cover Instant Pot and make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 2 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove lid.
- Drain noodles: Set hamburger patties aside. Drain noodles in a colander and set aside.
- Make gravy: Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting. Add in the butter and melt. Whisk in the flour until smooth and creamy. Slowly add in the milk, a little at a time, whisking as you add it in. Stir in the cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Let gravy thicken then turn off Instant Pot. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hamburger steaks over egg noodles and covered with gravy.

Notes/Tips
- What should I serve with this meal? I like serving this alongside steamed or roasted vegetables like broccoli, brussels spouts or cauliflower.
- Can I double this recipe? You can try doubling this recipe. The main issue is you’ll need to brown your hamburger patties in batches since there is not enough surface area on the bottom of the Instant Pot.
- Can I halve this recipe? Yes you can. Halve ingredients but keep the cooking time the same.
- How to store leftovers? Store in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot* but you can also make this in the 8 quart pot or halve the recipe in the 3 quart pot.

Needs better instructions.
Looked at the ingredients list and said to myself “awesome I have all these” and took out my meat to thaw. Started making meat patties and when I got to the step to cook the noodles BAM curveball… guess you need a special trivet thingy I’ve never heard of. If you need special equipment for a recipe it should be easy to find and up front like the ingredients and not surprising you half way through recipe.
Was looking forward to making this, but had to make something else boring 🙁

My husband made this tonight. Ohhhhhh my gosh! Amazing!

Thanks I am so glad you all liked it! Thanks for the 5 star review.
the amount of panko crumbs is misleading on the 1/2 recipe. It says “cup panko crumbs”. Could be misleading as a cup of crumbs. Otherwise, it sounds super yummy & I can’t wait to try.
Sorry. Those 1/2 and double buttons aren’t always correct.
Hello, Karen! Could I sub ground turkey for the beef? Would I need any modifications if I did?
Yes you can. I find ground turkey has more liquid in it, so you may want to increase bread crumbs.
can we use the slow cooker for this recipe I would lie to try it and I don’t like the instant pot
Sorry not for this recipe! But you could make it on the stove.
How can we tell if the recipe IS OR IS NOT in your cookbook?
If the recipe was posted before august 2020 then it is in the cookbook.
