Maid Rite Sliders

Maid Rite

Maid-Rite sandwiches have been a Midwest favorite since the 1920s. Unlike a traditional hamburger, the beef is cooked loose and crumbly. My version is a twist off of the original adding in a homemade mustard BBQ sauce while adding cheddar cheese and dill pickles for a cheeseburger-style twist. The slow cooker version is especially nice because it gives the flavors time to blend together. The chopped pickles stirred in at the end add little bursts of crunch and brightness. Serve these on slider buns for game day, family dinners or potlucks. We ate these on Hawaiian buns for Skyler’s cabin trip with friends.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Lean ground beef–or ground turkey
  • Onion–or shallot
  • Kosher salt
  • Yellow mustard
  • Brown sugar
  • Pickle juice–or apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce–or soy sauce
  • Black pepper
  • Hot sauce–or a pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Water
  • Shredded cheddar cheese–or Colby Jack cheese
  • Dill pickles

Steps

Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onion. Cook for about 5 minutes, until meat is no longer pink. Drain off excess grease. Transfer to the slow cooker.

Stir in the salt, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, hot sauce and water and stir.

Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours.

Stir again. Stir in the cheese and pickles.

Serve on slider buns or on mashed potatoes or plain.

Notes/Tips

  • Serve on slider buns, hamburger buns, toasted Hawaiian rolls, or over mashed potatoes.
  • Serve with potato chips, French fries, macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans or a green salad.
  • Toasted, buttered buns make this meal even better!
  • This recipe can be gluten free if you use gluten free Worcestershire sauce.
  • I used my 8 quart Instant Pot* on the slow cook function. I was cooking for a large group so I tripled the recipe.
  • This recipe is great for parties because the filling can stay warm in the slow cooker while guests build their own sliders.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. The meat mixture freezes well for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
  • Other recipes you can make with pickles are Instant Pot Dill Pickle Pasta Salad and Mac Attack Casserole.
Did you know you can filter the recipes on my website to search by meat type, IP or Crockpot, low carb, gluten free, etc.? Use the filter to find exactly what you are looking for.
