Instant Pot Regis Philbin’s Pasta
The world has lost too many celebrities this year including Alex Trebec, Sean Connery, Eddie Van Halen, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Little Richard, Kobe Bryant, Kirk Douglas, Kenny Rogers and Regis Philbin. Regis was quite a character! I loved Who Wants to Be A Millionaire and would try to play along at home, more often than not never making it past $24,000. Regis was the perfect host for that show.
Today’s recipe comes from Kathie Lee Gifford’s “Good Gifts”* book in which Regis’ wife, Joy, shares a favorite recipe of her husband. The original recipe is made on the stove and has many more steps and dishes than mine. If you’re all about making things easy on yourself try my version of the recipe! The hardest part is sautéing the garlic!

What should I serve with Instant Pot Regis Philbin’s Pasta?
The pasta, chicken and broccoli are all in one dish so it doesn’t need much to make a meal. I like to serve with garlic toast or with a green salad and Olive Garden salad dressing.

Instant Pot Regis Philbin’s Pasta
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes (plus 10 minute NPR)
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 6 servings 1x
Description
An Instant Pot version of Regis Philbin’s favorite pasta dish. It has bowtie pasta, broccoli, chicken, tomatoes, parmesan cheese and garlic. A simple but delicious dish that is easy to make in your Instant Pot.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 heaping cups of cooked, cubed chicken or turkey (OR 1 pound raw chicken cut into bite size pieces)
- 1 3/4 cups chicken broth
- 1/8 tsp red pepper
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- 8 oz uncooked bow tie pasta
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes or 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
- 1 (12 oz) package frozen broccoli
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 2 Tbsp chopped fresh basil
- 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting. When the display says HOT add in the oil and swirl it around. Add in the garlic and sauté for about 30-60 seconds. Do not burn! Turn off sauté setting.
- Add in the chicken and coat the chicken in the garlic and oil. Add in the chicken broth and scrape the bottom of the pot so that nothing is sticking.
- Add in red pepper and vinegar. Add the pasta and spread out evenly.
- Add the tomatoes on top of the pasta and spread them out so they are covering as much of the pasta as possible.
- Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 5 minutes. While the pasta is cooking, cook the broccoli according to package directions in the microwave or on the stove.
- When time is up let the pot sit for 5 minute and then move the valve to venting. Remove the lid.
- Stir in the broccoli, butter, basil and parmesan. Salt and pepper, if needed.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
I used my 6 quart Instant Pot Duo 60 7 in 1*. Make in the 3 or 8 quart pot with no changes.

- Method: Instant Pot

This was so good! I used Italian sausage since that’s what I had on hand. Delish!

Sounds so good!
Can you use ground beef or turkey?
Yes I would brown it with the saute setting first.
Is it white wine vinegar or white vinegar?
I just used white vinegar but white wine would also work.
HI! Do you drain the can of tomatoes or just dump it in as is? Thank you!
I did not drain the tomatoes
I made this casserole, with a few minor changes, and it was truly wonderful. Also makes enough to feed me to a week. I added onion to sauté with the garlic, and some mushrooms, because I like more vegies, and I omitted the butter just because. I used whole wheat noodles, and added two minutes to the pressure time, which was way too much. ( I need to know how to adjust a recipe when using whole wheat pasta instead of white pasta.)
I always use the same time for white or wheat or maybe just 1 extra minute.
Thanks for the answer. I’ll remember it, for sure
Hello Karen,
Where can I get your cookbook? I am always printing off your recipes and my binder is getting too big. I figured I would be better off with the cookbook! 😁
You can find it here: https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/order-your-cookbook-now/
Would I be able to use frozen chicken breasts? I don’t have fresh chicken on hand. Thank you!
It needs to cook at the same rate as the pasta. So you’ll have to thaw it first. Then cut it up into bite size pieces. Sorry wish there was an easier way.
Thank you! I decided to cook two chicken breasts in my second instant pot and added the cooked chicken when I made the regis philbin’s pasta. It was very good.

Hi Karen, I enjoy making your recipes so much! I have not had one yet that we didn’t like! I have placed my order for your cookbook.. for myself and my daughters. Can’t wait to get them!
Thank you so much Christine! I think you’ll love the book!
I followed the recipe, but added green beans instead of broccoli and diced tomatoes with green chiles. When I opened the lid there was still an awful lot of liquid.
did you use raw chicken?
yes,but I dried it.
Sometimes the chicken lets off liquid. So that’s my guess. Next time you could stir in a cornstarch slurry and that would help!
What kind of vinegar did you use?
I used white vinegar
Hi Karen could I use fresh broccoli and just cook it with the pasta?
Yes, it will be plenty done and possibly mushy though
May I ask what kind of vinegar you used?
Just white vinegar
Thank you!
I don’t have an Instant Pot…can this be made in a slow cooker, instead?
No but you could definitely do it on the stove. Here is the original recipe: https://www.today.com/recipes/how-you-make-regis-philbins-favorite-pasta-dish-t60096
I used the following replacements as these are the ingredients I had on hand:
one red onion
ground turkey
chili powder
gluten free fusilli
mixed vegetables (California blend)
dried basil
We all had seconds it was so good. Thank you for the great recipes.

Did you use the same pressure cooking time for the gluten free pasta? And it worked well?
Hi Karen,
I followed all the cooking steps in the recipe, pressure cooking time and the 5 minute natural release. Pasta was perfect. The brand I used was Catelli (4 grain blend – rice, brown rice, corn and quinoa. Delicious.
Thank you for all you do. Love your recipes.
Thanks this is good info for those that eat gluten free
I made this for dinner this evening, and we both liked it. I didn’t have canned tomatoes, so I used Pace picante sauce (mild) and left out the red pepper seasoning. I also used Rotini whole wheat pasta, because that’s what I had. Not sure how “authentic” it was, but it was good! I also appreciate your including directions for 3-quart Instant Pots, because that is what I have.
Sounds like a great version to me Kathleen!
Is there a way to cook the broccoli in with the pasta and chicken?
I didn’t try because I know broccoli gets too mushy very quickly. So you could try adding it on top of the tomatoes but it’ll be more like pulverized broccoli (like broccoli soup consistency) instead of broccoli florets.
I actually haven’t tried this yet but wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your frequent emails, one of the few people who have consistently great content.
All the best,

I hope so too Juliee!!!
Can this be made with elbow macaroni?
YES! Totally. It would be great.
Thank you, Karen. So good of you to answer right back. 😇
