Instant Pot Great Steak Sandwich
Steak sandwiches are, oh, so good! I used to work at a place when I was in college that was called The Great Steak. They served all sorts of sandwiches but everyone loved the “steak and cheese.” It was grilled sirloin with seasoning salt and it was piled high on a bun and topped with melty provolone cheese.
It’s nice to go out out to eat, but to save some bucks you may want to eat at home. Grocery prices are high so try making a steak sandwich with a less expensive cut of meat, the beef top round steak. This sandwich is soooo good! You’re going to love the tender meat and the garlic butter spread. It’s super simple but has lots of flavor.
When you see the meat that comes out of the pressure cooker, to be honest, it doesn’t look all that appetizing. But it’s really tender and flavorful! Just make sure to cut the meat as thin as possible and across the grain and it’ll be really good!
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Beef top round steak–sometimes labeled carne asada. I find this at Winco. It’s a very thin steak with a definite grain pattern.
- Olive oil
- Worcestershire sauce
- Seasoned salt–I used Lawry’s brand
- Onions–I used frozen yellow onions
- Broth–I used Better than Bouillon Beef Base and water
- Butter
- Garlic powder
- Dried dill
- Hoagie buns–or any type of bun you like
- Provolone cheese–or another type of cheese you enjoy
Steps
- Slice the top round steak across the grain into the thinnest pieces possible. I used a sharp serrated knife* and it helps if you throw the meat in the freezer for 10-20 minutes before slicing.
- Season the meat: Throw the meat into a bowl and stir in 1 Tbsp of olive oil, Worcestershire and seasoned salt. Set aside.
- Sauté onions: Heat Instant Pot on the sauté setting. When display says HOT add in the remaining 1 Tbsp of oil and the onions. Sauté the onions for about 4-5 minutes. Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.
- Pressure cook: Add the meat into the Instant Pot. Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 5 minutes on LOW pressure. When time is up let the pressure release naturally (mine was all released within 10 minutes). Remove the lid.
- Buttery goodness: In a bowl stir together the softened butter, garlic powder and dill. Spread the inside of the hoagies with the butter spread. You’re going to be shocked at how amazing this is!
- Serve: Pile some meat on the bun and top with provolone cheese. You can also toast the buns, if you’d like. Add a couple slices of tomatoes, if desired. Eat and enjoy.
Notes/Tips
- Serve with a side salad or fruit salad and potato chips.
- Try adding some sauteed onions and mushrooms to your sandwich to really amp it up.
- Try toasting the hoagie buns with cheese to get the cheese all melty. I do this under my oven’s broiler.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in your 3 or 8 quart pot.
- Store any meat leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- This recipe can be gluten-free if you use a gluten free Worcestershire sauce and serve on gluten free bread.
- For a low carb option serve the meat wrapped up in lettuce leaves or on a low carb tortilla.
- Other recipes you can make with seasoned salt are Keep A Man Chicken (Air Fryer Or Oven), Instant Pot Man Lovin Potatoes, Instant Pot Seasoned Shredded Chicken and Instant Pot Southern Hamburger Steaks.

Personal preference but I think thyme is a better herb choice than dill.
★★★★★
Good to know! Both would be great!
Good point, Karen. We all likely have our preferences for herbs for each recipe we make and one isn’t better than another.
Let me tell you a funny story related to herbs. When I was a university professor one of graduate assistants told me one day that she’d made a chicken dish that was kind of bland and wondered how she could make the leftovers tastier. I told her that rosemary was a good herb with chicken. The next day she came in and said she’d put in two tablespoons of dried rosemary. She thought it was better but I thought she’d probably made it inedible. Rosemary is a powerful herb and 2 T. is a huge amount.

WHOA!!! That IS a lot of rosemary haha!
Looks good. I would like to slow cook this. I want it for dinner when I get home from work and I don’t want to leave the kids a bunch of directions. How would you convert it?

I have an older model Instant Pot that does not have a low pressure setting. Can this recipe be made with high pressure setting? Thank you!
Yes you can do that. I would do 3 minutes on high pressure.
