Instant Pot French Toast Casserole

Instant Pot French Toast Casserole

Oh boy was this delicious! I am a huge fan of French toast but hardly ever make it. This Instant Pot French toast casserole really gave me all the deliciousness of French toast and was so easy to make. It only calls for 7 common ingredients. The only thing I had to get from the store was the French bread.

What Equipment Do I Need to Make Instant Pot French Toast Casserole?

  • A 6 or 8 quart Instant Pot*
  • A deep pot-in-pot dish such as the 3 quart IP liner* (used inside the 6 or 8 quart IP liner) or a Fat Daddios 7×4 inch pan*
  • A trivet/sling* to lower the dish into your Instant Pot
  • Optional but nice…an air fryer lid* to brown up the top of the casserole

What Ingredients Do I Need to Make Instant Pot French Toast Casserole?

  • ½ loaf of French bread–this can be stale. Don’t use sandwich bread. Other good choices are challah or brioche.
  • 3 eggs–the ingredient that binds it all together and firms the liquid
  • 1 cup milk–or if you want it more rich try using half and half
  • 1 tsp cinnamon–for extra flavor
  • 1 tsp vanilla–for extra flavor
  • 2 Tbsp butter, softened–for the crumbly sugar topping
  • ¼ cup brown sugar–for the crumbly sugar topping
  • Maple syrup–for drizzling on the top

How do I make Instant Pot/Crockpot French Toast Casserole?

For the Instant Pot:

  1. Spray a deep pot-in-pot dish with non-stick cooking spray and add in the cubes of bread. The bread can be stale and in fact does better if it is not fresh out of the oven.
  2. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Pour the mixture over the bread and toss well until all bread is coated.
  3. In a small bowl cut the butter into the brown sugar with a fork or pastry blender. Crumble the butter mixture over the top of the bread. This just adds something special! It tastes so good.
  4. Cover the pan with foil or a lid. Place it on a trivet/sling. Lower the dish into an Instant Pot that has 1 ½ cups water in the bottom.
  5. Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 15 minutes. When time is up let the pot sit for 10 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid and foil.
  6. If desired, use an air fryer lid to brown up the top of the casserole by cooking for 3-5 minutes at 400 degrees, or until it is to your desired color.
  7. Scoop onto plates and serve topped with maple syrup and a side of fruit.

Slow Cooker Instructions:

  1. Spray a slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and add in the cubes of bread. You can use a smaller crockpot, like a 3 quart or a larger 6 quart crockpot. The 6 quart will cook quicker than the 3 quart. You can double the recipe in a 6 quart slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Pour the mixture over the bread and toss well until all bread is coated. At this point you can go onto step 3 or you can refrigerate overnight and cook the next day.
  3. In a small bowl cut the butter into the brown sugar with a fork or pastry blender. Crumble the butter mixture over the top of the bread.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours, or until your desired doneness. Each slow cooker cooks differently.
  5. Scoop onto plates and serve topped with maple syrup and a side of fruit.

Just a deeper pot in pot dish like a 7×4 inch pan should work.

I bet you could! I haven’t tried it myself so I can’t recommend a cooking time or temperature. You may want to google around for ideas.

So good! My whole family loves it. We sprinkle with cinnamon sugar for a topping. We have been living through a remodel with no kitchen. This has been an easy go-to. Thanks for the break from BBQ every night 😉

Oh I hope you get through your remodel soon! It is hard to be without a kitchen. But I am glad to hear that the IP is helping!

What would I need to do to double the recipe – just increase all of the ingredients by two? How would the cooking time change in an Instant Pot for a crockpot?

You would double the ingredients. Hopefully you have a pot in pot dish that is deep enough. I would also increase the cooking time by 25% since the casserole will be much deeper.

This was delicious! I used three stale cinnamon-raisin bagels instead of the bread called for in the recipe, and let the bagel chunks absorb some of the egg mixture before cooking. Will be making again!

You hit it out of the park with this one Karen! The 3qt. inner pot worked perfectly inside of my 6qt IP. I preheated my air fryer oven and a couple of ramekins, then filled them up and did 3min at 400F. My wife & I had seconds, therefore no leftovers. Still have the other half of the French bread loaf so…..

Why can’t you just put it in the pressure cooker with the pressure cooker lid?

Without the pot-in-pot method, you would get the burn notice. It’s not liquid-y enough to be placed directly into the IP.

Any chance you can tell me how many ounces of grams are in a half loaf of French bread?

Hi I just looked this up for myself. A regular sized french bread loaf from Safeway is 16oz. So half is 8oz which means you can make the first batch for yourself and use the second half to share with others.

I used 7 ounces of bread. My loaf was 14 ounces. So that would be 198 grams.
