Amish Hamburger Casserole–an easy one-pot Instant Pot dinner made with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, creamy gravy and melted cheddar cheese for the ultimate comfort food meal.

Amish Hamburger Casserole
This easy dinner has just a handful of pantry friendly items. It’s a quintessential beef and potatoes dinner for those hearty eaters. No canned soups are used in this dinner but a simple homemade gravy is made instead. Greg and Skyler love stirring a little pickle juice and diced pickles in with their portion and I can’t say that’s a bad idea! The bit of acidity adds a punch of flavor and gives it a cheeseburger feel. Enjoy! (This recipe is adapted from Amish Cheesy Hamburger Steak Casserole Recipe With Potatoes on 30seconds.com)
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Ground beef–or ground turkey
- Onion–or shallot
- Garlic powder
- Black pepper
- Seasoned salt–or kosher salt
- Worcestershire sauce
- Better than Bouillon beef base
- Russet potatoes–or Yukon Gold potatoes
- Milk–or half-and-half
- Cornstarch
- Cheddar cheese–or Colby Jack cheese
Steps
Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting. When display says HOT add in ground beef and break it up. Add in the onion. Brown for 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the garlic powder, pepper and 1 tsp of the seasoned salt.

Pour in the water and Worcestershire sauce and scrape the bottom of the pot. Stir in the beef base. Turn off Instant Pot.

Scatter the potatoes into the pot so they aren’t stacked directly on top of each other. Sprinkle the potatoes with the remaining ½ tsp of seasoned salt.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set manual/pressure cook button to 1 minute. When time is up let pot sit for 5 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid.

Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting. Gently stir in the milk. Stir cornstarch together with a tablespoon of water to make a cornstarch slurry. Stir the slurry into the pot to thicken the gravy. Turn off Instant Pot.

Gently stir in the cheese until melted.

Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips
- Serve with a green salad, steamed broccoli, green beans, peas or roasted vegetables.
- Sharp cheddar cheese will provide a stronger cheese flavor than mild cheddar.
- For a creamier texture, substitute half-and-half for the milk.
- A sprinkle of chopped parsley or green onions adds a little freshness and color before serving.
- This recipe can be gluten free if you use gluten free Worcestershire sauce.
- I used my pink 4 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 6 or 8 quart pot.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this recipe. Potatoes can become grainy and change texture after freezing and thawing.
- Other recipes you can make with seasoned salt are Instant Pot Kitchen Sink Casserole and Pam’s Casserole.
