100 Year Casserole

This is an old fashioned ground beef and potato casserole recipe that has supposedly been around for 100 years. The original version had fewer ingredients but I decided to add in a few extra ingredients (like (worcestershire, garlic powder, smoked paprika and green chiles) to give it a little more flavor. I took the original stove/oven recipe and made it all in my Instant Pot. Potatoes cook very quickly in the Instant Pot…only a 5 minute pressure cook time! Greg was going crazy over this dinner, he loved it so much. I think you’ll love it too! Enjoy!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Lean ground beef–or ground turkey
  • Onions–yellow, white
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Chicken broth–or beef broth
  • Red potatoes–or yukon gold
  • Diced green chiles–I used mild
  • Cornstarch
  • Evaporated milk–or half and half
  • Sharp cheddar–or provolone cheese

Steps

Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onions. Brown for about 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and Worcestershire.

Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.

Dump in the potatoes and green chiles. Don’t stir.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 4 minutes. When time is up move valve to venting and remove the lid.

In a small bowl stir together the cornstarch and milk until smooth. Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. Stir the slurry into the pot until thickened. Turn off Instant Pot. Salt and pepper to taste.

Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the top.

If you have an air fryer lid place it on top and bake at 350 for 5 minutes. If you don’t have an air fryer lid then place the stainless steel liner in the oven and bake at 350 for 10 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with some greens like green beans, asparagus, salad or spinach.
  • This recipe can be gluten-free if you use gluten free Worcestershire sauce.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 3 or 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with diced green chiles are Instant Pot Cowboy Spaghetti and Instant Pot Mexican Lasagna.

My adult son and I love this recipe. We top it with fried eggs and he uses siracha sauce. Quick and easy. It’s for dinner again tonight.

I was actually hoping this would have crockpot directions too. Although it would probably be easy enough to figure out!

Hello Karen. I subscribed to your site probably a little over a year ago for slow cooker recipes. All you post is for an instant pot without even adding directions for a slow cooker. I really like the idea of this recipe so I’m going to attempt it in a pan on the stove using common sense so the potatoes aren’t rocks when the dsh is complete! Good luck to me!!!

Karen, this sounds fantastic. I cannot wait to try it. I only subscribe to 2 other recipe sites besides yours. I’ve made so many of your recipes and all were winners. Thank you for all you send me. 🙂
