Shaker Casserole

Shaker Casserole

Today’s recipe is adapted from Ham and Noodle Casserole in the Shaker Your Plate Cookbook (a cookbook from the Shaker community in the 1980s). This recipe was an easy dump and start type of meal that doesn’t take much effort. I love the thick dumpling-like noodles and the salty bites of ham. This is one of those dinners that is very homey and comforting. You can make this in your Instant Pot or slow cooker.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Chicken broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
  • Poultry seasoning
  • Reames frozen egg noodles
  • Ketchup
  • Butter
  • Ham steak
  • Milk–or half and half, cream, evaporated milk
  • Frozen peas–or another type of frozen vegetable you like
  • Cheddar cheese–I like sharp

Steps

Pour broth into Instant Pot. Sprinkle in the poultry seasoning. Sprinkle in the noodles. Add in ketchup, butter and ham on top.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set manual/pressure cook button to 8 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 5-10 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid.

Stir in the milk, peas and cheddar. Put the lid back on the Instant Pot and let it warm through the peas and melt the cheese for 5 more minutes (just on the keep warm setting).

Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with roasted broccoli or a side salad.
  • Find the frozen noodles next to the frozen breads in your grocery store. You can also use Grandma’s brand.
  • You can use leftover holiday ham instead of a ham steak, it’s a great way to repurpose it!
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 3 or 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with frozen noodles are Instant Pot Bob Evan’s Soup and Instant Pot Beef and Noodles.

Regular egg noodles because I can’t find the frozen. How long in crockpot?

I wouldn’t recommend this one for the Crockpot. Regular egg noodles tend to get too soft and mushy. It really works best in the Instant Pot or oven for this recipe! 💛

Appreciate the reply, Karen. I was meaning regular dry noodles, though, not specific egg noodles. Trying to work with what’s always kicking around in the pantry (eg fettuccine,or linguine perhaps) rather than something that’d require a specific grocery trip 🤔.

oh right, yes linguine and fettucine would work. I would do a 5 minutes pressure cook time with a 10 minute natural pressure release.

I made this last night. You can’t beat ham, cheese and noodles! I have not been into poultry seasoning lately though, so I used a half teaspoon of garlic powder and a half teaspoon of white pepper. It came out delicious! Thank you for another great recipe!

Karen, any suggestions regarding pressure cook time increase if using dry, uncooked pasta, instead of frozen egg noodles? That’d make this handy recipe a lot more easily doable for me. Dry pasta is always accessible at home 😊

if it’s just the normal wide egg noodles they only need a 1 minute pressure cook time which will be fine!
