Nauvoo Casserole–a copycat recipe of Hotel Nauvoo’s wild rice dressing, a creamy rice dish with only 6 ingredients.
Nauvoo Casserole
If you ever visit Nauvoo, Illinois make sure to stop at the Hotel Nauvoo for their buffet dinner. My family has taken several trips to Nauvoo and each time we love to eat dinner at the buffet. It has the same menu every time including fried chicken, green beans, apple crisp, turkey, buttered corn, au gratin potatoes, homemade blueberry muffins and their legendary wild-rice dressing. Their hours are limited so make sure to see if it is open before you go.
I came across a copycat recipe for the wild-rice dressing and knew that I needed to give it a shot. It was creamy and delicious and took me back! It only has a handful of ingredients. It’s definitely not the most healthy but serve it as a side dish and your guests will love it.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Water
- Box of BEN’S ORIGINAL™ Long Grain & Wild Rice
- Chopped, cooked chicken–I used rotisserie chicken, or you can use this recipe.
- Cream of mushroom soup–I used Campbell’s
- Chicken gravy–or turkey gravy. I used a jar of turkey gravy.
- Butter
- Panko–or bread crumbs
Steps
Pour water into Instant Pot. Sprinkle in the rice and seasoning mix.
Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 3 minutes. When time is up let pot sit for 10 minutes and then move valve to venting. Remove the lid. (If you don’t have an Instant Pot just make the rice on the stovetop according to package directions).
Stir in the chicken, cream of mushroom soup and gravy.
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Scrape the mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a small bowl stir together melted butter and breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top of the casserole.
Bake for 40 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Notes/Tips
- Serve as a side dish to any dinner or potluck you’d like. Since it has chicken in it you can also serve it as the main dish.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot* to cook the rice. You can also cook it in a 3 or 8 quart pot. If you don’t have an Instant Pot just cook the rice on the stovetop according to package directions.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Other recipes you can make with panko are Miss Congeniality Casserole and Daddy’s Comfort Casserole.

I would think that the recipe would turn to mush in a crockpot. Instant Pot or stovetop would be best for this recipe.
