Oh hi there BEST HOT CHOCOLATE of MY LIFE!

Sorry to do the all caps thing but seriously I need to express how much I love this hot chocolate. It is a rich chocolatey dessert in a mug. It is velvety and creamy and almost too easy to make. It has notes of salted caramel but it doesn’t overpower the chocolate. I need to throw a christmas party just so I can serve this hot chocolate. I need to bottle this hot chocolate and bring it to people that I really want to be friends with. I need to run 9 miles a day so I can drink this hot chocolate from one of those bottles that you hide in a brown paper bag all day long.

Bottom line. I love this hot chocolate and you will too 🙂

If you’re thinking that this would be a perfect recipe to make for your holiday party, you’re right. It totally will be a hit! The best thing is you can make it ahead of time and keep in warm in your slow cooker during the whole party.
This recipe is so simple…even a kid could make it. Add milk to a slow cooker and then add in 2 cups of semi sweet or dark chocolate chips. You definitely don’t want to use milk chocolate chips because it is going to be sweet enough with the sweetened condensed milk. My favorite brands of semi sweet chocolate chips are Kirkland brand (price is great), Guittard, Ghirardelli and Hershey’s Special Dark.
add chocolate chips into the slow cooker. I like to use semi sweet chocolate chips for this recipe.
Next add in the can of caramel sweetened condensed milk. I think this is only going to be available seasonally so stock up now!  If you can’t find this at your grocery store I’m thinking you could substitute caramel topping that you use on ice cream.  Finally you’ll add in some sea salt and vanilla extract. It’s not going to be salty…don’t worry. It just gives it a little flavor. Then you’ll give it a stir and let the milk get hot and the chocolate get melty. It’s just as easy as that.

Description

The yummiest hot chocolate ever! Make it and keep it warm in your slow cooker.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 cups of milk (I’ve used skim to whole)
  • 1 (14 oz) can Eagle Brand caramel flavored sweetened condensed milk or an equal amount of caramel ice cream topping (I’ve also just used regular sweetened condensed milk and it has been great)
  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips (I like the Costco brand)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Instructions

  1. Pour all ingredients into the slow cooker and stir.
  2. Cover and cook on HIGH until chocolate is melted and milk is hot. Mine took 1 1/2 hours, but my slow cooker cooks fairly fast. Each slow cooker will vary.
  3. Whisk very thoroughly. Turn slow cooker to warm. Serve hot chocolate in mugs with marshmallows and whipped cream.
  4. If there are leftovers you can pour the hot chocolate into a pitcher with a lid and store in the refrigerator. Each time before drinking, stir with a whisk.

Notes

Ideal slow cooker size: 6 quart

YUMMY! I made this with a jar of salted caramel ice cream topping instead of caramel flavored sweetened condensed milk. Served up with marshmallows and Reddi Wip! I poured the leftovers into a pitcher, and have been enjoying it all week!

This is also great with a shot or two of espresso. Basically homemade salted caramel mochas from Starbucks. I do about 1/3 cup with this, add my espresso and round it out with plain steamed milk.

Sorry, just to be clear, if I can't find the flavored condensed milk should I add regular condensed milk and the caramel topping? Or just the caramel topping?

I'd do just the caramel topping!

If you don't have a big party and can not (or should not!) drink that much hot chocolate at one time, it seems like you might be able to melt the chocolate, add the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt and store in the refrigerator and add some amount to a cup of hot milk to enjoy this. It seems to me that the mixture would keep long enough to drink it all a little more judicially…what do you think?
