Amish Wedding Roast

According to AmishHeritage.org, “The Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania have a traditional wedding meal that gets served at every wedding…they serve Amish Roast (PA Dutch turkey stuffing – commonly called roasht), mashed potatoes, gravy, creamed celery, and peas, along with buns, salads, and desserts.”

I decided to try my hand at making this recipe in the Instant Pot and it worked out beautifully. I used some chopped rotisserie chicken (you can also use turkey) and it was stirred into homemade stuffing. I’m not usually a huge stuffing fan but this stuff was totally addicting. It was buttery and perfectly seasoned. I may even use this recipe for Thanksgiving in the future!

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

With only a handful of fairly basic ingredients you can make this amish roasht recipe!

  • White bread–I used store bought but you can also use homemade bread
  • Butter
  • Shallot–or a half cup diced onion
  • Celery
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Parsley flakes
  • Cooked, chopped chicken or turkey–I used rotisserie chicken
  • Egg
  • Milk

Steps

Cut the slices of bread into cubes. Place the cubes on a baking sheet and toast them for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. Add in the butter and let it melt.

Add in the shallot, celery, salt, pepper and parsley. Saute for 5 minutes. Turn off Instant Pot.

Fold in the toasted bread cubes and chicken to coat in the butter.

In a small bowl whisk the egg and milk together. Stir it into the pot.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Turn Instant Pot to slow cooker setting on “more”. Set the time to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

When time is up serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • You can also use cooked turkey in the place of chicken.
  • If it seems too dry after cooking for 1 ½ hours add a little bit of chicken broth.
  • You can also cook this in a slow cooker on high for 2 ½ hours or on low for 4 hours.
  • The Amish serve this alongside mashed potatoes, gravy, creamed celery, and peas, along with buns, salads, and desserts.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in an 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • If you’d like to make your own chicken by cooking a whole chicken. You can use this recipe and let it cool slightly before removing the chicken from the bones and cutting it into pieces.

I love your recipes and refer your website often, but this recipe is tasteless even after I added poultry seasoning. it was also soon dry. I won’t recommended this one or make it again.

I have not tried this recipe yet as I just received it. I just put the bread slices in the toaster and cut them into squares. It goes pretty fast. Can’t see heating up the oven for a few slices of bread. I also mix white bread with whole wheat. It makes a great stuffing. This recipes sounds just like the one I have always made but am going to make it in the insta pot next time. Love and appreciate all the great recipes. l also have your book which is great. Thank You

This looks great! Just wondering how many slices of bread did you use, or is it more of a fill the pan situation?

    Thanks for the recipes!
