Amish Six Layer Dinner

Amish Six Layer Dinner

This beefy potato one pot meal is quite easy and you can make it in your Instant Pot or Crockpot with barely any effort. It’s filling and uses easy ingredients you’ll have on hand. I’ve adapted this recipe from an oven recipe in the Amish Country Cookbook, Vol. 2.

Ingredients/Substitution Ideas

  • Lean ground beef–or ground turkey
  • Onion–yellow or white
  • Celery
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
  • Russet potatoes–or red potatoes
  • Carrots–or baby carrots
  • Cream of celery or cream of mushroom soup

Steps

Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. When display says HOT add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onion and celery. Brown for 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Stir in the salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Pour in the broth and scrape bottom of pot so that nothing is sticking. Turn off Instant Pot.

Layer in the potatoes and carrots and then spoon the soup over the top.

Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 2 minutes. When time is up move valve to venting and remove the lid.

Gently stir. Serve and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

  • Serve with green salad or steamed green beans and a warm dinner roll or cornbread with honey butter.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of thyme when seasoning the beef.
  • Cut the carrots thick so they don’t get too soft under pressure.
  • To make this gluten free use gluten-free cream of mushroom soup (I’ve seen this at my grocery store).
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in a 3 or 8 quart pot.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Other recipes you can make with carrots are Instant Pot Broccoli Cheddar Soup and Straight out of Heaven Casserole.
Did you know you can filter the recipes on my website to search by meat type, IP or Crockpot, low carb, gluten free, etc.? Use the filter to find exactly what you are looking for.

I am loving your recipes! My husband is recently retired and we are eating our big meal midday. I tried this one today and it is another winner! I made small changes, browning the beef and veggies in a frypan, adding Montreal steak seasoning to the beef. I also mixed the broth and soup mixture together and poured it on top of the potatoes and carrots. I then realized that that change wasn’t smart because there was no liquid in the bottom of the pot to help pressurize the IP. So I added a small amount of water. Although it turned out great, it was soupier than your photos. That was my fault. So I added some shredded cheddar cheese to tighten it up. Overall, we will be making this again.

Oh shoot! Yes, the layering process is important for that reason to help the pot come to pressure without the burn message. Glad it worked out in the end though!
