Final Score:
Thai Curry 45 Tortilla Soup 90
Thai Curry:
1) Prep time- I had to go to 2 different stores to find what I needed, and even then I had to settle for a different kind of roast. The process was a bit involved for a crockpot recipe, and I found myself running out of time to get it in before church. 5 pts.
2)Making it again- I would probably not make this again, however, my family did eat it. 10 pts.
3)Overall Flavor- Everyone ate it, with the exception of my 3 yr old refusing to eat very much of it. I think the only second helpings were from my husband, because he was really hungry. Everyone wanted to add something to enhance the flavor. My kids and husband broke out the pineapple, coconut, and cheese to add to the dish. The flavor kind of fell flat, but it wasn’t unpleasant. 25 pts.
4) Value- I found this meal on the pricier side, especially when it came to the specialty ingredients of curry paste and sesame oil, the roast was on the higher end as well. 5 pts.
Total: 45 pts.
Tortilla Soup:
1) Prep time- This recipe was incredibly quick and easy, which was a big help with 5 kids in a busy, crazy house. I love that you can use frozen chicken, it took no time at all to just dump the ingredients in and be on my merry way. 15 pts.
2)Making it again- I would most definitely make this again. Husband and kids all agreed that they would love to eat this again and had second helpings, even from some of my kids who usually don’t. I only had a tiny Tupperware of soup leftover, enough for me to have it for lunch tomorrow, yum! 20 pts.
3)Overall Flavor- This was excellent, the flavors complimented each other perfectly. I was a bit hesitant to include the red pepper, but went ahead and added it. I almost substituted canned corn for the frozen, but decided if I was going to do this right I needed to follow the recipe as exactly as possible. The frozen corn was so much better and the sweetness of it balanced with the cilantro and other ingredients was a hit. This meal most certainly did not disappoint, big thumbs up all the way around the table! 40 pts.
4)Value – This meal was extremely affordable. I had practically all the ingredients in my pantry. I only had to purchase a few fresh ingredients like the red pepper and cilantro from the store. The combination of all ingredients is very well priced, which helps with feeding a large family on a budget. 15 pts.
Total: 90 pts.
The clear winner is Tortilla Soup! While my family ate the Thai Curry, they weren’t very excited about, I have a ton leftover in my fridge. Tortilla Soup on the other hand was an entirely different story. All the kids loved it, even my pickiest little 3 yr old cleaned her bowl without complaints which is rare. I’m just excited that I get the little bit leftover for lunch tomorrow while the big kids are in school ๐
So the tortilla soup advances to the Sweet 16. It’s easy prep time, flavor and budget friendly qualities will make it a formidable opponent.
