Shredded Pork Salad |
Megan tried both of these delicious pork dishes. This is what she had to say, “This recipe was extremely easy to prepare and didn’t include unusual or hard to find ingredients. (I used regular chicken bouillon and onion seasoning, not Shirley J’s.) The only things I had to purchase were the pork roast, the lettuce, and the toppings. I followed the suggestions in the original review and made sure to get cilantro and avocado, both of which were really tasty on this salad. I really liked that the sauce ingredients are things I always have on hand, and I was surprised at how flavorful the roast was after cooking only with bouillon and onion seasoning.
I think my slow cooker cooks extra hot, so even though I had it on low and I had doubled the amount of meat, it still got done a lot sooner than the recipe indicated. The meat shredded perfectly, was super tender, and had a great flavor. It was delicious on the salad– but I think it would also make some great sandwiches. I took off 5 points in the category of likeliness of making it again only because we don’t eat a lot of pork in our house, but I can see it being one of the few pork recipes that we will make again.
Value for $ gets the full 10 points because it is very inexpensive, especially if you happen to find picnic pork roast on sale as I did. I was able to double the recipe, which allowed me to freeze a big bag of shredded pork. We will be able to enjoy this delicious meal again soon.

Pulled Pork Paninis |
Although the prep time for the paninis is longer than many, it only takes one initial investment to cut the time down on subsequent uses of the recipe. You can make the rub mixture and keep it in an airtight container, and you could very easily make enough of the barbecue sauce to last for several different recipes. I didn’t have to buy anything special to make either the rub or the sauce– had all of it already. For these reasons, this recipe scores 7 of 10 in the first category. I may repeat this recipe idea, since the sandwiches turned out great and I really like the combination of pork, cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, and sourdough bread…Overall flavor gets 40 out of 50. In value for $, I give this recipe the full 10 points. Like I mentioned above, I already had most of the ingredients. I love when that happens!”

Jen made these two dishes and she said that the Tostados were “very easy to make. Just threw it all together and it cooked all day perfectly. I did have to work at chopping things at the end, but it shredded surprisingly easily. As for the ingredients, I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand so it’s not like I could just throw this recipe together without planning it first. I needed to buy the roast, black beans, cilantro, more tortillas, and I didn’t have cumin in my spice rack so that was an added expense. But everything was easy to find at the store so it wasn’t too difficult. I liked it well enough to make it again, but it’s not exactly the type of meal I would make often. It made A LOT of food (3lb roast) and even though we had another family over for dinner I’d say there was still half left in the bowl. It should freeze though so it’s not like it’ll go to waste. The overall flavor was delicious! The stuff I had to buy came to about $16 which I consider high for one meal, but it made A LOT of food, maybe even 24 servings so with all the ingredients to top the tostadas it would come to less than $2 a serving!”
The spaghetti sauce was quite a bit of work chopping, browning the sausage, making the wheat berries. I did have almost everything in my pantry though, just had to get the wheat from a friend, so that was nice. As much as we liked it and would enjoy eating it again, it’s just SO much easier to open a jar from the grocery store! We loved it! Very flavorful. I used a hot italian sausage which one of my sons didn’t like, but the rest of us gobbled it up. The 2yo even had 3rds! Since I had almost everything on hand already I didn’t have to make much of a special trip except to get some wheat from a friend. It made about 10 servings and would also be much less than $2 a serving!”
Up next, the shredded pork salad versus the tostadas!
