Ponzu Chicken–a sweet and savory crockpot chicken recipe made with orange juice, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil for a flavorful dinner that’s perfect served over rice.

Ponzu Chicken
This recipe gave me takeout vibes. Greg said it reminded him of Teriyaki Stix. It’s made with simple ingredients you may already have at home. It’s a quick-to-prepare dump and go slow cooker meal. And I used frozen chicken thighs because I didn’t have any thawed…which worked just fine. The sauce is really yummy spooned over rice, you may want to double it. It’s also a great recipe to double or triple since the leftovers reheat really well for lunches during the week and you can even freeze some for another busy night later on.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Boneless skinless chicken thighs–or chicken breasts
- Low sodium soy sauce–or tamari
- Fresh orange juice–or bottled orange juice
- Honey–or brown sugar
- Water
- Rice wine vinegar
- Sesame oil
- Cornstarch
- Red chili flakes–optional for heat
- Sesame seeds–for topping
- Green onions–for topping
Steps
Add chicken thighs into bottom of slow cooker.
In a bowl whisk together the soy sauce, orange juice, honey, water, vinegar, sesame oil, cornstarch and chili flakes. Pour the mixture over the chicken.

Cover slow cooker and cook on low for 2-4 hours, depending on how hot your slow cooker cooks and whether or not your chicken is frozen.

Shred up the chicken and stir it into juices. Serve topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds and green onions.

Notes/Tips
- Serve with rice and steamed broccoli.
- Double the sauce if you want it more saucy.
- Chicken thighs work best because they stay tender in the slow cooker and shred easily. But you can also use breasts.
- For extra orange flavor add a little orange zest to the sauce.
- Want it spicier? Add more chili flakes or a drizzle of sriracha before serving.
- I used my 6 quart Ninja slow cooker. It cooks quite quickly. I used frozen thighs and they cooked in about 3 hours.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Other recipes you can make with sesame oil are Instant Pot Cupbop Korean Beef and Instant Pot Mongolian Chicken.
