Slow Cooker Smoked Sausage and Cabbage
I had a reader comment about a recipe they wanted to figure out how to make in the slow cooker. He said, “When you mentioned foil packets, it rang a bell. One of my favorites is small red potatoes halved, sliced onions, sliced sausage and cabbage, dotted with butter and salt and pepper, bake at 425 for 35 min wrapped in foil.”
I immediately knew I would like this dish. I figured I could make it in the slow cooker. The texture would be different than a foil packet meal baked in the oven but the flavors would still be great and the ease and quickness of the recipe would make it desirable to have often.
So I threw some broth into the bottom of the slow cooker and then piled in the rest of ingredients. This was a winner in my book! Next time I will add in some sliced carrots to give it a bit more color, and perhaps play around with the seasonings. I kept it super simple with just the smoked sausage and salt and pepper to season the whole dish. If you want to get a little spicy try a smoked Cajun andouille sausage.

I’m about to make this, but I have a quick question?? I don’t have any potatoes or carrots. I do have a half a bag of simply potatoes in the refrigerator, can I add those or should I wait to add them as they’re small cubed?
I think that would be fine to add at the beginning
I don’t usually comment on recipes, but this is absolutely amazing as is. the butter is what makes it, in my opinion. thanks so much for this!!
That makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I totally agree, the butter is the magic! 🧈🙌
This was really good. At the end when I taste tested it, it seemed to be missing something.I added a tablespoon of sugar, a teaspoon of mustard powder and one dash of Worcestershire sauce. That did it. It deepened the flavor and made this really enjoyable. Next time I will add an apple and some apple juice in place of the sugar. I will also have a carrot for some color. This is a winner!
I like those ideas! Thanks Rudy!
Can I cook this on high to speed up the cooking?
yep for sure 🙂
WOW. I added a few things which I love with cabbage. I added 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp of caraway seeds and 1 diced apple, added for the last hour so it would not get mushy. I also took your advice and browned the sausage pieces first for that added color and taste. For fun I used a bag of tiny multicolored potatoes. It was a masterpiece!!!!
Love all these ideas…especially the apple. Sounds great!
Great simple recipe which I’m making now.
I added some cooked bacon, adobo seasoning, & paprika. It’s already smelling good!
Nice! I want to try that adobo seasoning
I grew up with this meal, my mom ( and my grandma).made it in the crockpot, along with on the stove top, in a pot and in a skillet, it’s been a staple in my family for 20 something plus years. and it’s something that can be made all year long no matter how you choose to cook it, I have it cooking in the crock pot right now and my house smells amazing everytime I lift the lid to stir it around. but I am one of the odd balls I love cabbage and love the smell of it.
yum! It is a good one!
This was amazingly good, I added bacon as well ❤️
Thanks for the 5 stars Jennifer!
I came across this recipe by googling crockpot cabbage and sausage ideas. What a great surprise. I also added carrots and used beef stock instead. The weather has been turning cool and I love coming home to a house that smells amazing. A definite keeper. The whole family enjoyed it. Thanks for a great recipe.
Thanks so much for the 5 stars Denise!
Delicious! I just made this for dinner and it tastes sooo good. I doubled the recipe, added a bag of frozen corn and for the potatoes I used the tiny ” Baby Dutch yellow” ones. I just threw them in whole. It worked beautifully! It added a buttery taste that paired great with the cabbage. I also added carrots like a few other posters.
Thanks so much for the recipe. It’s definitely a keeper.
I love those baby dutch potatoes! And I love that you can throw them in whole. That saves time and they do taste so great!
This was great as originally written. I hate flavor of caraway so wouldn’t think of adding it. I can see myself adding something like mushrooms or an apple, because I think I’ll be making this often! Ty for sharing it!
Mushrooms and apple both sound great! Glad you liked it!
I am wanting to do this as an appetizer with sausage and cabbage (maybe onions) and was wondering if you’ve tried sauerkraut in place of cabbage. Either way, I’m sure it will be a hit. Thanks!
I haven’t! But I really think it would be amazing!
I bit the bullet and spent the money for a Wonder Oven and Dream Cooker. This will be the recipe that will initiate the slow cooker part of my dream cooker. I know it is going to be fabulous. Thank you so much for posting it.
What size crockpot,?
Anywhere between 3-6 quart
Great recipe! Definitely a go to anytime!
Thanks for the 5 stars Amber!
What kind of onions did you use? White onions?
Thank you!
I used yellow onions, but white would be great too
Made this last night, and it was very good….leftovers tonight were really! good! Did not change a thing about the recipe. So easy, so good!
So happy to hear it Scott!
I have fixed your recipe twice now.
My 90 year young mom loves it and asked me to fix it again. I do also add baby carrots in ours.
Thank you!!
Oh that is so sweet. I’m glad she likes it Kimberly!
Hi How about browning the sausage before tossing in the crock pot and could I add cajun seasoning to this and if so how much, dont want it to spicy just for a little spice flavor
Browning it is a good idea and cajun seasoning would be great. I would add a half teaspoon to start. You can always add more later if needs be.
Can you sub sweet potatoes?
I bet that would work!
I have already prepped cabbage, onion, and smoked Andouille sausage, and I planned use half of a leftover red bell pepper and a whole orange bell pepper. I still have several red potatoes to halve. But now I’m wondering if I should replace the peppers with sliced carrot instead. This will be a slow cooker meal. Thoughts?
The peppers might get a little mushy but either would be tasty!
I loved making this I added carrots too
Love that idea Rosa!
Could I freeze this meal?
I bet you could. The cabbage might be a little weird in texture though.
I like it and it was so good and I will will cook it again.
Hooray! Thanks for sharing Bobby!
How !ugh sour cream and caraway seed would you ad? Can you double this and if so how long should you cook it?
Yes you can double it and the time will remain the same 🙂
I’d start out with just 1 tsp of caraway and you can always add more if you need to.
I love this dish!!!!!!! I added some caraway seed and sour cream and my husband loved it! I love your blog and always look forward to your posts.
Sounds so great with the sour cream and caraway!
