Bring the steakhouse experience to your house

You may think that because I like to cook a lot that I don’t like to go out to eat. False. I love all things food and I love going out to eat! It’s so fun to look at a menu and pick something new or go with an old favorite. My husband is a big fan of meat in general so he loves to choose steakhouses for a Friday or Saturday night out-to-eat dinner. And although I’m not a vegetarian I prefer all the side dishes and other choices besides meat at the steakhouse. For example, I love the warm bread they bring to you with real butter. And don’t forget the soup of the day! I love soup and there’s just nothing better on a cold day than some creamy potato soup.

So you may be thinking, “I love the steakhouse experience but I don’t love the steakhouse price.” Or you may have trouble finding a babysitter or it might just be -2 degrees outside and you don’t want to brave the weather. Whatever reason it is, you can can create the bread and soup of a steakhouse easily in your own home.

My son goes crazy over these soups. He will eat like 3 bowls in a row. I am so happy to have found these soups since I can barely keep this kid from starving, or so he thinks.

Whole Wheat Steakhouse Bread Recipe

So now that you have your potato soup covered you can also make the delicious bread at home. This particular loaf of bread reminds me of the type they serve at Outback Steakhouse. It is actually pretty healthy. It’s whole grain. This recipe makes two loaves. One for you and one for a friend.

Description

Whole wheat homemade bread similar to Outback Steakhouse bread.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups warm water (bath water temperature)
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 5 1/2 cups whole wheat (hard white) flour
  • 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • Oatmeal for the top (optional)

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, stir together water, oil, molasses, and honey until mixed well.
  2. Add 3 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour to the bowl (save the rest of the flour for later).
  3. Add cocoa, yeast, and salt, and mix on low until blended.
  4. Allow mixture sit for 10 minutes.
  5. Mix in the remaining 2 cups of flour, one cup at a time, until dough clings to hook and almost clears the sides of mixer, about 3-4 minutes on low.
  6. Cover bowl with greased plastic wrap.
  7. Allow dough to rise in the bowl until doubled, about 30-60 minutes.
  8. Remove the dough from the mixer and divide the dough into two equal sized pieces. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  9. The dough will be very sticky and not very thick. Place the dough into 2 greased loaf pans and shape as well as you can. Sprinkle with oats.
  10. Let dough rise until doubled, about 30-60 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  11. Bake for about 30-35 minutes or until bread makes hollow sound when tapped. Let cool for a 15 minutes, slice and serve warm with butter.
