Review:
Several years ago I ran a marathon close to where my Grandma lives. After the marathon was over I went to her house for lunch and she served this dish. I have loved it ever since! It just tasted so good to me! This is traditionally done in the oven, but works great in the slow cooker as well. No need to warm up your already hot kitchen this summer by turning on the oven. Just turn on your crockpot instead. 3 stars.
I’m looking to see if anyone has made this casserole in the instant pot without using the pot in pot method which confuses me.
Anyone?
I have made this for years but I add 1 can of drained bean sprouts. This gives the hot dish a different appeal. Everyone loves it – also I use a bit more soy sauce – the light kind. About 1/2 cup. We call it Oriental rice.
THIS IS A RECIPE MY MOM STARTED MAKING BACK IN THE EARLY 70’S.. YOU DON’T NEED TO PRE COOK THE RICE, JUST PUT IT IN WITH THE BEEF AND EVERYTHING ELSE TO PUT IN THE CASSEROLE DISH… I USE BEEF BROTH INSTEAD OF WATER AND ONLY 1 LARGE ONION, IF YOU WANT IT A LITTLE HOT ADD 1/4 TESP. CUMIN AND THE SAME AMOUNT OF GINGER… I RATHER LIKE IT THE WAY IT IS EXCEPT I ADD 1 SMALL CAN MUSHROOMS DRAINED…
THE NAME I KNOW THIS RECIPE BY IS… READY??? CHINESE HAMBUGER… I WILL TRY IT THIS SUMMER IN THE CROCK, SOOO MUCH BETTER AND FOR THAT KAREN, THANKS, PAULA
I agree with Marie Day- this recipe needs help. As published, the finished recipe was bland for my taste. Next time, I will try it without using a slow cooker. I never thought much of using condensed soups in a slow cooker anyway. And i will “toast” the rice too, and maybe try adding a tablespoon or two of sesame oil. and maybe a pinch of red pepper flakes. I will post back and let you know.
As for the chow mein noodles- remember to save a few packages from your next take out. I always ask for extra, along with the soy sauce and the mustard!
Thank you for sharing this recipe with us. .
ROBIN, YOU CAN BUY THE NOODLES AT WALMART, AND PUT SONE IN A PIE PAN PUT THEM IN A 350 OVEN, FOR FOR 15 OR 20 MIN, KEEP AN EYE SO THEY DON’T BURN OR USE A TOASTER OVEN… SESAME OIL, SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA, PROBABLY ONLY. 1/4 TEASP. THAT WOULD UP THE FLAVOR, GONNA TRY IT ROBIN.. THANKS, PAULA
This tasted horrible, it had no flavor…yuk

Nice of you, Jeff. Thanks!
Hi Jeff,
Your ingredient list is the same as my recipe. I got the recipe from an Aunt in 1967.
The method is slightly different. The method I use is quite easy.
Saute the fresh vegetables and brown the ground beef in the same skillet
Stir in 1 cup of uncooked Minute Rice, soups, soy sauce and water. Mix well and put in casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees F about 30 min. or until heated through. Sprinkle top with chow mein
noodles for last 10 minutes of baking time. My husband likes to have plum sauce on his.
Optional:- You can add sliced mushrooms or sliced water chestnuts before baking.

If you do not cook the rice, how much water do you put in? I’m assuming you omit the 1 1/2 cups of water.
Heck y’all I’m from Fall River Mass and we have the original ( other than real Chinese) who make their own noodles and sauce. You add the spices, and veggies as you please
You need to include the water for the rice to cook. Otherwise it would be very dry/hard (possibly not edible). The rice “cooks” in the liquid as it bakes.
The recipe I have says 1 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup uncooked rice
Also, 1 1/2 pounds ground beef.
Other ingredients are the same.
Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, add chow mein noodles and bake 15 minutes more.
That was thoughtful of you. Thanks, Jeff
Does the rice go in the slow cooker with all the other ingredients as well?
yes the cooked rice does.
ha ha ha You guys are funny. The chow mein noodles are hard until you cook them with liquid, then they get soft….
Chow Mein noodles are meant to be crispy, not soft!
That’s why they go on just before you serve it.
Chow mein noodles are like spaghetti, but you can buy them crispy as a crunchy topping
…ummm you’re confused with “Lo Mein” noodles, yep their the SOFT ones!! lmao
I agree – the chow mein noodles I've purchased in the past have been crispy and crunchy. However, the last bag I purchased was VERY crunchy – too much so. Next time I will go to another store when I purchase them.
Wow. Interesting comment from Anonymous.
I've been buying Chow Mein Noodles for years – in both bags and cans, and they are always crispy and crunchy.
I didn't know there were 'soft' ones.
Me either. Have never known of soft ones.
Note to anyone who doesn't realize it that chow mein noodles are not "toasted" nor "crispy," they are "soft" noodles.
My mom used to make this, and I haven't had it in forever! But don't you miss the chow mein being toasted?
