Crock Pot Iowa Maid Rites
If you’ve never had an Iowa Maid Rite, think of it as a sloppy joe without the tomato sauce! The ingredients are simple and basic but the results are a yummy! You’ll love using your slow cooker for this recipe so that dinner is ready to go when you are. Scoop the meat onto a hamburger bun, add plenty of dill pickles and dig in! If you want to get saucy try adding a squirt or mustard and ketchup like I did.
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Lean ground beef–I used 93/7
- Onion
- Garlic–fresh minced garlic or jarred
- Kosher salt
- Black pepper
- Worcestershire sauce
- Apple cider vinegar
- Beef broth–or water and Better than Bouillon
- Sliced dill pickles–I love the crunch and tang they add! You can also use pickle chips or hamburger dill slices
- Buns–Hamburger buns, brioche buns or slider buns all work
Steps
Heat a pan over medium high heat. Add in the beef and break it up. Add in the onions. Brown for 5 minutes. Drain off excess grease. Transfer to the slow cooker.

Stir in the garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire, vinegar and beef broth.
Cover and cook on low for 3 hours. Remove lid and stir.

Use a slotted spoon to scoop meat mixture onto buns. Top with pickles.

Notes/Tips
- Serve with French fries, tater tots, potato chips, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans or corn on the cob.
- Toppings: Dill pickles are the classic choice. You could also add mustard, ketchup, chopped onions or a slice of American cheese.
- Toasted buns hold up especially well to the juicy meat.
- I used my 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in an 8 quart pot.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for 4 days. Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months.
