Description

This Amish cake is an old-fashioned, one-bowl chocolate cake that bakes up super moist and soft with the easiest batter. No eggs are needed to make this cake!


Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 6 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 cups cold water

Chocolate frosting (optional):

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 Tbsp milk
  • 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

Oven Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Whisk sugar, flour, salt, baking soda and cocoa in a large mixing bowl. 
  3. Make a large well in the center and pour in the oil, vanilla, vinegar and water. Stir with a rubber scraper until combined into a smooth batter.
  4. Spray a 9×13 inch pan with non-stick cooking spray and pour the batter into the pan. Bake for 30 minutes. 
  5. Prepare the frosting. Bring the butter, milk and cocoa to a boil over medium heat. Stir well with a whisk. Remove from heat. Whisk in the salt, powdered sugar and the vanilla. When frosting is smooth spread it on the cooled cake.

Slow Cooker Instructions:

  1. Spray a 6 quart oval slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Whisk sugar, flour, salt, baking soda and cocoa in a large mixing bowl. 
  3. Make a large well in the center and pour in the oil, vanilla, vinegar and water. Stir with a rubber scraper until combined into a smooth batter.
  4. Pour the batter into the slow cooker. 
  5. Cover and cook on high for about 3 hours, or until cooked through.
  6. Prepare the frosting. Bring the butter, milk and cocoa to a boil over medium heat. Stir well with a whisk. Remove from heat. Whisk in the salt, powdered sugar and the vanilla. When frosting is smooth spread it on the cooled cake.
