Hug It Out Crisp–easy Instant Pot apple crisp that will get you all the hugs! With warm cinnamon and sugar apples and a brown sugar, oatmeal and butter topping you’ll definitely be going back for seconds.
Hug Me Delight
Greg is the biggest sucker for apple crisp. When fall hits and Sundays roll around that is the only dessert he really has strong feelings about. Whenever I make it I know I’ll be getting lots of hugs and praise. He cannot stop himself from eating half the pan…lol.
Today’s version of apple crisp is made in your Instant Pot with the air fryer lid (you can still make it in the oven if you don’t have an air fryer lid). The apples are steamed with a 1 minute pressure cook time and the crispy topping is baked on in only 10 minutes. So this is a much quicker version than the oven version which cooks for 45 minutes.
This recipe only calls for apples and some basic pantry staples. The one thing you need to remember though is that vanilla ice cream is a must to go along with steaming hot apple crisp!
Ingredients/Substitution Ideas
- Apples–granny smith, golden delicious, honey crisp, fuji are all good choices
- Cinnamon
- Lemon juice
- White sugar
- Salt
- All purpose flour
- Quick oatmeal–or old fashioned oats
- Brown sugar
- Butter
Steps
Pour 1 ½ cups of water into Instant Pot. Add apples to a steamer basket. Place the steamer basket into the Instant Pot.
Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 1 minute on low pressure. When time is up move valve to venting and remove the lid.
Carefully remove the steamer basket and set aside. Discard the water and dry out the pot. Add the apples into the pot and stir in ½ tsp cinnamon, lemon juice, white sugar and salt. Stir.
In a bowl add the crumb topping ingredients. Use a pastry blender or fork to cut the butter into the mixture.
Sprinkle the mixture over the apples.
Cover the Instant Pot with air fryer lid and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, or until topping gets browned.
Scoop into bowls and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes/Tips
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
- I used my Duo Crisp 6 quart Instant Pot*. You can also make this in the oven if you don’t have an air fryer lid (look at notes section in recipe card below).
- Store leftovers in an airtight container* in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. This tastes best the first day since the topping will be crisp. After the first day the topping gets soggy.
- Some excellent apple varieties for apple crisp include: granny smith, honeycrisp, jonagold, braeburn and fuji.

I am assuming the apples are still cooked in IP even though it goes into oven after? (I have no air crisp lid
Karen says
Hi Toni, good clarification! You do not need to pre-cook the apples if you are doing the oven version.
