Description

Browned ground beef with melty cheese and caramelized onions served on a toasted bun and topped with mayo, ketchup, lettuce and tomatoes. An Instant Pot version of the NYC chopped cheese sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 sweet onion, chopped
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/8 tsp baking soda
  • 1 pound 85/15 ground beef
  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 4 (1 oz) slices American or cheddar cheese
  • 4 hero rolls
  • Mayo
  • Ketchup
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Shredded lettuce

Instructions

  1. Pour water into Instant Pot. Add in onion. Drizzle oil over the onion. Sprinkle baking soda over the top of the onion.
  2. Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to sealing. Set the manual/pressure cook button to 4 minutes. When time is up move valve to venting and remove the lid.
  3. Turn Instant Pot to saute setting. Add in the ground beef with the onions. Break up the beef and brown and cook through for about 5 minutes. Add in the salt and pepper.
  4. Turn Instant Pot to keep warm setting. Place the cheese slices on top of the meat and let melt.
  5. Slice the hero rolls ¾ of the way through with a serrated knife. Toast the buns (I used oven’s broiler). Spread mayo on each of the buns. Drizzle ketchup on top of mayo.
  6. Use a spatula to transfer a quarter of the meat and cheese filling to each sandwich. Add sliced tomatoes and lettuce. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Serve and enjoy!
