America’s Test Kitchen Slow Cooker Cookbook Giveaway!

A few weeks ago a representative from America’s Test Kitchen contacted me and asked if I would like to do a giveaway for their brand new slow cooker cookbook.  I of course said yes.  For you and for me.  I am so excited about this book.  First off, if you aren’t familiar with America’s Test Kitchen let me tell you a little about it.  It is a show on PBS.  Basically they try some of America’s favorite foods and test it 30, 40, or even 50 times to see how to perfect the recipe using science and a lot of taste testing.  (p.s. if anyone from ATK is reading this, I’d love a taste tester job there, okay thanks bye).  My blog is a tiny microcosm of what they do there.  I’m sure that ALL of the recipes in this book will be rated 5 stars.  I mean how could they not be, having been tested that many times?  Later this week I will be posting and reviewing a recipe from their book…so stay tuned!

So, does this book sound like something you would like to own??? (um, yeah)

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite slow cooker dish.  Want to enter a second time?  Like 365 Days of Slow Cooking on facebook.  How about a third time?  Like America’s Test Kitchen on facebook

The Rules: Up to three entries per person, U.S. residents only. Commenting will close on Friday February 18th at 12:00 pm.  Entries that do not follow the entry requirements will not be considered. One winner will be chosen at random and announced next week. Good luck!

Disclosure: I received a free copy of The America’s Test Kitchen Slow Cooker Revolution Cookbook in exchange for hosting this review and giveaway. Though this review was sponsored, all of the opinions expressed above are mine alone.

I am a compulsive crock pot cooker. I own 2 large crock pots and one triple crock pot that I could not live without. Not only is the main dish going in one, like my killer Molly's Italian Lasagna, but the other will have dessert like a Blackberry Cobbler waiting for a scoop of ice cream. My triple crock pot double heads when I want a pot roast in one; Garlic Almond Green Beans in the second and a Cobbler dessert in the third. Man cannot live without a crock pot.

Not a dish, per se, but I love love love making chicken or turkey broth in the slow cooker – I toss in the carcass, carrot, bay leaves, whole peppercorns, onions – no salt. Cover with water and let 'er rip – you end up with a wonderful clear broth, no skimming necessary. I let it cook all night, and then just have to ladle it into bags, let them freeze flat and store. Best broth ever!

I have to admit I've never had good results from anything in my slow cooker. I guess bean soup would be the closest to a success, but I've been disappointed over and over with recipes and results. (Unfortunately, I don't eat pot roast so can't vouch for that.) Everything seems to get mushy even at low temp. Maybe I need a better cooker!

The meat just pulls apart and is ready to be placed on a buttered hoagie and dipped in the Au Jus. Mmmmmmmmm. I think I know what we're having for supper tomorrow. 🙂

The onion we like a bit crunchy so we add that late in the cooking. The longest part of the meal is soaking the beans over night. The next day its done for our dinner hour. Love it.

Pork road with saurkraut. Strain a can of saurkraut and spread it on the bottom of the pot. Fill the can to the top with either water or a light colored beer and add it to the pot. Place a 2-3 lb center coat boneless pork roast on top of the Saurkraut. Season the roast with kosher salt, pepper, and dijon mustard. Cook on low for 10 hours. Serve with pork gravy and bread dumplings.

I love my slow cooker and ATK! It's hard to narrow a favorite down but I would have to say just basic chicken, especially boneless skinless thighs. Meat tends to dry out in the slow cooker but these stay moist. You can keep them whole and enjoy their natural flavor and tenderness or you can shred them and use them in anything from chili to enchiladas to cacciatore.

German style sweet and sour red cabbage is fantastic when cooked in a crockpot. It was a real hit at a fall party this year.

Crockpot a chicken is a great way to have it ready for several meals during the week. The meat is moist and tender, great for chicken tacos

Chili is my favorite slow-cooker dish. We love it with Fritos & cheddar cheese!

I love slow cooking. I own three slow cookers and I use them at least 2-3 times per week. If I can make it in a slow cooker, thats how it gets done. I would love some new recipes to try and this would be a great addition!
