Single Serving Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal Recipe

I love steel cut oats! But I don’t eat them very often because I’m too busy in the morning to let them cook on the stove top for 30 minutes. However, now that I have an Instant Pot I can cook them in 15 minutes from start to finish. I usually eat breakfast by myself in the morning because I get my kids off to school and then I exercise and then I eat breakfast. So I only really need to make one serving of steel cut oats.
I tried several times to get this recipe exactly right in the Instant Pot. What I found out was that steel cut oats like to stick to the bottom of the pot. By simply lightly spraying the bottom of the pot with non-stick cooking spray I was able to eliminate that problem. I also learned that the ratio of oats to water/milk is a little off compared to what it would be if you were making a big batch. As I adjusted the ratio, they turned out perfectly creamy and cooked through. This is the perfect breakfast to throw in the Instant Pot right before getting into the shower in the morning. Then when you’re out of the shower, your breakfast will be waiting for you.

Single Serving Instant Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal Recipe

Description
Make one serving of chewy and hearty steel cuts oats easily in your Instant Pot in 15 minutes from start to finish.
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup steel cut oats (not the quick cooking kind)
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 1/2 tsp brown sugar
Instructions
- Lightly spray the bottom of your Instant Pot with non-stick cooking spray.
- Add in the oats, milk, water and brown sugar. Stir.
- Cover the pressure cooker and make sure the valve is on “sealing.” Push the manual button and set the timer for 10 minutes.
- Once the timer beeps turn the valve from sealing to “venting.” As soon as the pressure is released you can open the Instant Pot and spoon your oatmeal into a bowl. I like to eat mine with sliced bananas and a splash of milk.
Notes
This recipe took 15 minutes from start to finish. My Instant Pot took about 5 minutes to come to pressure and then 10 minutes of cooking time.
I used this 6 quart Instant Pot for this recipe.

I was so unhappy until I found this recipe! I kept making the Steelcut Oats in my 3 Qt pot but it was too much for only me and lasted too many days. This is the perfect amount!!! Thanks so much. I didn’t have vegetable oil so I used my peanut oil instead. That works with higher heats too :D. Thanks it’s delicious!

Update… I left the above reply but mine when opened had burned slightly on the bottom. I would either reduce to low pressure or would do all water no milk. I have the 3 Qt. size It didn’t ruin the taste it just left a layer on the bottom that wasn’t edible. Still yummy!

3 cups water
INSTRUCTIONS
Place the oats and water in your Instant Pot. Pressure cook for 4 minutes with a 10 minute natural pressure release.

Why is the cook time so long? I usually make one cup of steel cut oats at a time, and that only takes 4 minutes to cook. It seems like they’d be completely disintegrated after 10 minutes.

Thank you for posting a single serve…that was my hope because I am the single person in this house who finds the chewy texture of steel cut nice. I note that my box of oats suggest 1/4 cup as a single serving, but hey, more can be better, right? I used two chopped dates in place of the brown sugar and my oats had quite a bit of chew in them. I may try with the brown sugar as sugar can serve to soften texture in bread recipes. Thank you again for the post!

yes you could. I would play around with the time though. It may need a few more minutes to cook.

I was thinking about getting the 8 quart instant pot. Do you think the oatmeal recipe would work int that too? Was concerned that there wouldn’t be enough water, etc for it to come to pressure.
