Review:
This was one of those days that I had no idea what to make for dinner. I went to my pantry and found a can of cream of mushroom soup and a thing of onion soup. Bingo. It was also one of those dinners that I knew my husband would appreciate a lot. I was thinking of adding some cream cheese or sour cream at the end but the sauce was perfect and I decided not to add anymore calories. This is a great recipe if you’re feeding a crowd and need something super duper easy and fast!

Can you cook this in the InstantPot?
Karen says
Yes here is the recipe: https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/instant-pot-3-ingredient-chicken-and-gravy/

Couldn’t be any easier! So Yummy! I had 3 leg quarters threw in for 6 hrs.
Karen says
I love leg quarters! Sounds terrific!
Terri says
What can I replace the dry onion soup with? I have a problem with having too much salt in my diet.
Also, I detest the idea of eating mushrooms (fungus, don’t ya know), so I will have to try it with a different cream soup flavor. Has anyone done so yet?
Karen says
You could make your own: https://www.spendwithpennies.com/homemade-onion-soup-mix/
Retta (SUSY) Jones says
Today I put a whole mostly defrosted chicken in the crockpot, in a bowl I combined 1 dan cream of chicken soup, half can water, about a tablespoon each of onion powder, garlic & parsley powder and Crazy Jane’s mixed up salt. It’s not done yet but I have every confidence it will be tender and delicious. Since I got started late, 12:30 pm, I set it for 4 hours on high. Normally I always opt for 8 hours low.
Retta (SUSY) Jones says
Forgot to say, blended the items and poured over chicken!
Mary Moos says
I love this and so did some neighbors that I gave it to! I do not like mushrooms either I was going to switch up with of chicken soup and then I looked down and I seen cream of potato soup, I used frozen chicken breast oh, I also added slice carrots, and golden potatoes with the gravy from the cream of potato soup it was fantastic
Slim Kent says
I found Campbell Cream of Mushroom and Roasted Garlic but the can was only 10 ounces, so I added 2 cans and it was delicious!!
Ashley says
I have golden mushroom. Can I use that instead of the cream of mushroom soup?
Karen says
yes!
Judy says
My Husband can only eat certain things and hopefully This one he can. Thank you so much !!!!!!!
Karen says
You are welcome Judy!
Joann says
Hi Karen, I have been making this for about 15 yrs.. The only thing I do is I use Cream of Chicken Soup and I don’t use the Onion Soup Mix. Serve it over egg noodles and a side of stuffing (in the box). It is so good. I am going to try it with the Onion Soup Mix next time. P.S. For seasoning I sprinkle some Nature Seasoning in it. I forgot to mention that and I just new someone would say “No Seasoning” LOL. Thanks for the great recipes and Please keep them coming. Have a wonderful and Blessed day.
Karen says
Thanks Joann, you too!
Judith says
What would be an alternative to canned soup? Thanks.
Karen says
I’d add in some heavy cream afterwards. Or you can make your own condensed soup at home with this recipe: https://pinchofyum.com/homemade-cream-of-chicken-soup
James says
Making this tonight. My roommate asked about asking a small bit of red wine. Any thoughts?
Robin Rouse says
Put this in the Crockpot a couple of hours ago. I harvested sweet basil & some jalapenos out of my garden this morning so I added that to your recipe. My house is smelling so good right now! <3
Karen says
Yum! I love the addition of fresh items from your garden 💗
Loretta Baker says
Hi Karen , I forgot to mention in my question to you ,that I only have 4 bone in skin on chicken thighs..will what i have work
Thanks
Karen says
Yes that should be just fine.
Loretta Baker says
Hi Karen .I would like to make this for dinner tonight but I only have 1 cream of mushroom with roasted garlic soup and I have a whole sweet onion… could i add the onion instead of the onion soup mix? and if so how much onion and would I saute it a little bit before putting in the crockpot?. i know its not exactly your recipe but this is what i have here ..
Thanks
Karen says
I would just do a bit of the onion. Probably not the whole thing and if you can saute it first. The onion soup mix adds in seasonings too so you might want to add in some bouillon if you have that! Here’s a recipe for homemade onion soup mix: https://www.spendwithpennies.com/homemade-onion-soup-mix/
Yolanda says
I cooked this today, but I only had two chicken breast so I used 4 chicken tenders. I used two cans of Campbell cream of mushroom and the pack of Lipton onion soup. I put it on top of rice, oh my it was so delicious. I will be cooking this simple meal again.
Karen says
Glad you liked it Yolanda!
Heather says
I just put this in the crockpot! Can’t wait! I was wondering tho if it was possible to add rice in with it at some point to cook along side it. I’ve not cooked rice in crock pot before so that might be a dumb question. LOL
Karen says
I haven’t tried this one with rice. I bet you could. I would add at the beginning with an equal amount of water.
Robin says
Hello.
Would love to try this. Not sure what kind and where I would get the gravy at.
Thank you
Brianna Stuart says
Should I add a little bit of chicken broth?
Karen says
You can but you don’t have to 🙂
Mandy says
I had to play around a little, but what a great base recipe! I had chicken thighs, a can of cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz), onion flakes, canned mushrooms, a little milk, a little butter, a little flour, and limited seasonings (gotta love cooking at a confirmed bachelor’s house). I browned the chicken in some butter, put it in the crockpot, and covered with the mushrooms, onion flakes, and soup. Then I whipped up a quick simple white sauce and added that to stretch the gravy. Cooked according to the recipe and served over buttered baked potatoes with peas. A great, hearty dinner for a chilly night!
Karen says
Sounds so great!
Janine says
If I use the slow cook button on the Instant Pot is it the same directions ? Instead of using a real slow cooker.. 🙂
Karen says
Use the highest setting of the slow cooker function, the lower settings don’t cook hot enough.
Adrina Surles says
Do I mix the can of cream of mushroom soup with water or the onion soup mix with water?
Karen says
No, just stir at the end.
Raven says
Can I do this recipe with chicken legs?
Karen says
Yes I bet that would taste really tasty.
Laura says
I’m using bone in chicken thighs. Should I cook it longer?
Karen says
6 hours on low
Maggie says
If I use 2lbs of chicken breasts, would I need to cook it for 8 hrs?
Karen says
No keep the cooking time the same.
Kim says
Gonna try tonight
Jaimee says
I put this on a bed of white rice! It was amazing!!
Celeste Mayer says
I only used three large boneless chicken breast but added two cans of cream of mushroom soup. Added a 8oz pkg of fresh sliced mushrooms as well. I cooked it on low for 8 hours and chicken just fell apart like pulled pork. My husband thought the chicken was too mushy and a tad too salty. The consistency was perfect to me, I am glad I added the second can of soup. I served it with stuffing and a veggie. I have to find a way to cut down on the sodium.
Karen says
Perhaps you could use low sodium cream of mushroom soup. I bet that would help a lot!
Candice says
Should the chicken breast be frozen or unfrozen?
Karen says
You can use either! Frozen will take a couple hours longer so closer to the 6-8 hour cooking time.
Kara says
My family loved it!! I used 4 thin boneless chicken breast. My family loves gravy so I used 2 cans of soup one can cream of mushroom and one cream of mushroom/chicken soup, served with mashed potatoes, stuffing and peas..it was a big hit!!
Karen says
That sounds awesome! Glad your family loved it 🙂
Cheryl says
Can the two cans of mushroom soup supplement the box of Lipton onion soup mix. Boyfriend can’t do onions not much onion taste I get that but he don’t like onions. Thanks
Karen says
I bet you could totally do that.
KATHY J HENCE says
I an trying this tonight but do I need to add a lil water to it ?
Constance says
If you cook the chicken frozen then that’ll probably substitute for the extra water.
Amy says
I only have beefy onion soup mix. Do you think that will work?
Karen says
Sure sounds good to me!
Sherry says
This was easy and delicious! I used boneless chicken breasts & cream of chicken soup, simply because it was what I had on hand. I served it over rice and the gravy was really good. I’m thinking next time I would use 2 cans of soup to have extra gravy! This would be nice served with stove top stuffing & a vegetable like a mini thanksgiving dinner without all the fuss! Thanks for the recipe, I needed a dinner idea at the last minute that was quick and easy this worked well.
Karen says
Thanks Sherry! I’m so glad you liked it!
Emily says
Any tips on how to translate this into a pressure cooker meal? I gave up my slow cooker when we got our Instapot. 😩
Karen says
Hi Emily, here is the Instant Pot version! https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/instant-pot-3-ingredient-chicken-and-gravy/
Anna says

you’re welcome!!!
Imperia DakMoon says
Amazing. My finiky eaters tore it up. You are my hero. For a family of 6 I just used 3 large boneless skinnless chicken breasts, and 1 packet onion soup mix, and the 1 small can of mushroom soup. Turned out perfect and just added can goods as sides made a fabulous dinner. Thank you.
Karen says
What a nice comment! Thank you! I am glad that you liked it and that your kids did too 🙂
Danielle says
I only have a 10 and a half oz can of cream of chicken. Do you think that would work or would it lose the gravy consistency? I also have multiple cans of beef gravy that could be used. What do you think?
Karen says
I think that would be enough cream of chicken!
Toni Witke says
This looks and sounds yummy, making it for dinner tonight
Manny Ramos says
Hello Karen!!..Thank you for the quick idea.. I’m a father of 2 picky children..I substituted the thighs and used a bag of boneless tenderloins 2 cans of mushroom soup two packages of dry onion soup mix and can of Campbell’s chicken gravy in the Crock on low for 8 hours served over rice…It was delicious

Carol Palin says
Can you use I can cream of .mushroom and I can cream of chicken and dry onion soup mix.
Thank you.
Karen says
yes that would be great!
Nicole says
How long do I cook this recipe on high for quicker cook time
Karen says
usually it’s just half as much time on high.
Amanda says
What if you are using Bone In chicken thighs?
Karen says
It would work great. Just remove skin and cut off excess fat before adding them to the slow cooker. Cook on low for 6 hours.
Krystal says
Just put it in the pot!! 😀
Krystal says
Making this for tonight’s supper! Can’t wait! ☺
Deborah Meyers says
Had to google making my own soup mix
But hoping this will be as good
Karen says
I’m sure it will be great!
Rootie says
Making this now….fingers crossed! Thanks for recipe.
Ann-Marie says
Thank you for this recipe. I put a sliced onion on the bottom, 4 frozen thighs (with bones and skin) on top, and then put two cans (10 oz) of cream of mushroom and a packet of dry onion soup mix on top. Finally, I had about a cup of chicken stock that I poured over and put the whole thing on low. I’m hopeful it will be saucy; not soupy. I’m looking forward to this dish!
Karen says
I’m hoping too! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Janelle says
Can I used frozen breasts? If so, what should I change the cook time to? Can’t wait to try it!
Karen says
Sure thing. Just add a couple of hours to the cooking time.
Chrystal says
What are the nutritional facts for this meal?
Karen says
not sure! But you can always plug it into the website to find out! https://www.caloriecount.com/cc/recipe_analysis.php
Gregory Miyata says
What happens is the can of cream of mushroom soup is just 10 3/4 ounces and not 13.75 ounces as in the recipe? Add water?
Karen says
no, don’t worry about it. It should be fine with just the smaller can!
Lisa says
Can you use boneless chicken breasts?
Karen says
yep! They cook a bit quicker though.
Ellen Chamblee says
This is in my crockpot cooking now! I tweaked it a bit so fingers are crossed! I used a whole chicken cut into 8 pieces. Seasoned chicken with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. I then lightly floured the chicken and slightly browned it in small amount of oil in cast iron skillet. I wisked together the onion soup mix and cream of mushroom soup and poured it over chicken in crock pot. We'll know the outcome in a few hours.
[email protected] says
Well that sounds amazing! I hope you like it.
Crazy1969 says
can I use cream of chicken instead of mushroom soup.
[email protected] says
Yes! I think that would work nicely.
Annapants! says
Trying this today. I added chili powder and Italian seasoning. Fingers crossed!
Erica Papkin says
I'm excited to try this tonight with so many good reviews! The only things I would change is mix the cream of mushroom soup and the onion soup mix first and then pour that on top on the chicken. Also, I didn't have chicken thighs so I'm using boneless chicken breasts.
[email protected] says
Good idea, Erica! Hope you liked it 🙂
Sierra Gamber says

Sara, so glad it worked out for you!!
Sara Simmons says
Just made this last night for my inlaws. They were coming in town and I wanted a hot meal ready for them when they got to their "Texas" home. I set up the crockpot and left. They absolutely loved it! I changed a few things based on what I had in the pantry & wanting to increase the amount of gravy. I used 8 boneless thighs, 2 packets of lipton mushroom onion soup mix, 2 cans healthy request cream of mushroom soup. I also cooked it on high.
Sofia S. says
Hi Karen, I accidentally used too small of a can of mushroom soup, HELP!!!
very excited to eat this though!
Karen says
