From time to time I will buy the frozen Rhodes bread dough loaves. As you know, it takes all day for the loaf to raise. I thought I would try and see if putting it in the crockpot could speed up the process. I placed the loaf in a bread loaf pan that fit inside my 6 quart slow cooker. Then I turned it to warm and put the lid on. 2 hours later it had completely raised and was ready to go in the oven. Talk about a time saver! The dough went from completely frozen to ready to go in the oven in just 2 hours.
You could also use this tip for your homemade bread dough. Obviously it wouldn’t take as long to raise because the dough won’t be frozen. I haven’t tried this yet myself so I’m not sure how long it would take. I’m guessing maybe 30 minutes? I’ll try it and get back to you!

What a wonderful idea! My kitchen always is cold, so bread takes forever to rise. Have tried the microwave with fair success, also the oven, but this seams to be the best idea yet. Will try it today!

Bread rises. It doesn’t raise!
Kathie Sawyer says
Not really necessary.
Patsarina says
Thank you for clarifying. I didn’t get it…,,
MaryAnn Coy says
Yes bread rises but in her context raise is acceptable if not totally appropriate. . However she might have better stated it as “After 2 hours the bread had finished rising”..
Pat says
do I put ghe lif on after putting the dough in the slow cooker ?
Caryl says
if you have a large Tupperware bowl that your bread pan would fit in you can put a lid on it with room to raise put hot water in a bath tub no more than 4 inches put your bowl or bread pan in Tupperware with a lid your bread will rise and usually the lid pop off when ready to shape or bake the bread. learned this from a camp cook .she did this with all the bread she made at camp.

Always a spelling queen in the group. Do you feel better now?
Dawn says
Ditto Cindy. I understood the initial suggestion perfectly. Grammar police in the house.
Nene says
Also, there might be visitors for whom English is not the primary language. Nice welcome. How many languages do you speak Amy?
Mary says
hey Karen, are you the spelling or grammar police?
Granny V says
I think it is so tacky when people take it upon themselves to correct other people’s spelling or grammar, if you know what they mean just read it and keep your smart mouth shut!
Pat says
How rude to correct! You understood what she meant.🫣

Megan says
1 to 2.5 hours on high can cook a loaf. It will not be as crusty as oven baked though.
Pauline Crocker says
I love the smell of home made bread. Will definitely be trying is. Thank you.

I like that Idea for Bread. I am going to make it.
Anna B. says
I have only low and high on my crock. Would I be using the ‘low’ setting for this? Thanks!
Karen says
I’d be nervous to use low because it will probably start cooking the bread!
Margaret Parker says
You can also put it in the microwave, close the door just enough for the light to come on with the door not catching. I do this every time I want bread to rise. Love it! Do not turn the microwave on!!!!!
Dave says
Its dangerous if the microwaves aren’t contained for your health !
Christine Xander says
says warm setting not low
Suzy says
Get a new one.
Nana says
I was thinking of this being a great time saver and wondered if placing that loaf pan in a couple inches of water inside the slow cooker would be a help in the rise.
[email protected] says
Yes, I bet would help!
Michelle says
Yeah, I was wondering too! My slow cooker gets really hot even on warm and I actually cooked the first loaf!

Any suggestions on raising and cooking directly in the crock pot? Can I rise on warm and then set to High when risen? Could I still use the loaf pan in the crock pot to do both?
[email protected] says
yes, I bet that would work! Place in a greased loaf pan, raise on warm then turn to high and cover and cook until done. I'm guessing that would be about 2 hours on high but not exactly sure since I've never done it. Let me know how it goes!
[email protected] says
yes, good idea on the parchment!!
Anonymous says
You could also put the dough in some parchment paper cut to fit the loaf pan if your loaf pan doesn't fit. Then you can lift out the parchment paper and drop into the loaf pan.
[email protected] says
Connie, make your homemade bread, shape it and place in a loaf pan. Place the loaf pan in the bottom of your slow cooker. Turn to warm and let raise. Good luck!
Corinne Romero says
How would this work with homemade bread recipe?
Linda W says
Love this idea!

Hello,
I like your blog, I've really enjoyed it.
I wanted to add my .02 worth on thawing out frozen bread dough. Microwave it for about 15 to 20 seconds and it will thaw it out very quickly.
This idea for the slow cooker rise is awesome and I'm definitely going to give this one a try.

Have you baked the bread in the crock pot? Turns out WONDERFUL!
I did 100% Rhoades whole wheat. Thawed loaf in a baggie overnightin refrigerator. Lined crockpot with parchment paper, tossed in the bread and baked 2 hr 15 min. PERFECT and YUM. White bread may only take an hour!
Nana says
Did you use high or low setting?
Anonymous says
Good Idea. maybe try spraying the crock pot with cooking spray or butter, so it won't stick.

This is a really good idea because I always forget to take it out so early. I like to make mom's turkey loaf with this bread dough.
Sally Sagers says
This is such a good idea! I can't wait to try it.
