Day 252: Dulce De Leche

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
water

Remove label from milk can. Place can on side into a 3 quart slow cooker. Fill with water until it is 3-4 inches above can. Cover and cook on low heat 8-10 hours. Turn off slow cooker and allow can to cool 40 minutes inside slow cooker. Chill caramel in unopened can in refrigerator until ready to serve. Use as a dip for apple slices or serve over ice cream.

Review:
This was so easy and so good! We served ours with apple slices. It tasted exactly like the caramel that is on caramel apples. I also made a pan of brownies. After I poured the batter in the pan I put a few dollops of caramel in the batter and swirled it around with a knife. They were so good...like turtle brownies! 4 stars.

What a funny recipe. We will have to try it.

My Mom used to do this on the stovetop when I was little. Haven't done it in a long time because of the warning of cans exploding. Does the slow cooker make this more safe?

I wonder if you can use a fat free condensed milk ....

Tyler was skeptical that it would end up on the ceiling, but we really enjoyed the finished product. It is the only way I can get my second to eat apples.

If the can is unopened, how do you know how long to cook it? 8-10 hours is a pretty big range. I'd like to try it, but I'd love to know how long you actually cooked it and why. Thanks!

I cooked it for 8 hours. Then I put it in the fridge to cool. It worked great.
